Pirog stops Martirosyan, retains WBO middleweight title

By Jim Dower: Making his second title defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight title, champion Dmitry Pirog (19-0, 15 KO’s) stopped his number #1 contender Russian Gennady Martirosyan (22-2, 11 KO’s) in the 10th round on Sunday night at the Olimp, Krasnodar, Russia.

Pirog, 31, teed off on the over-matched and inexperienced Martirosyan from the first round, hitting him at will with left hooks and right hands while constantly changing the angles of his shots. In the 10th round, Pirog opened up with a blizzard of unanswered punches on the hurt Martirosyan until his corner threw in the towel to save their fighter from taking any further punishment.
