By Dave F. Palattao: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0) considers himself as great and the new face of boxing. Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao considered by many as a greater fighter than Floyd Jr. Both fighters had been thrown a lot of criticisms in and out of the boxing arena. Sure, they have conquered great and not so great boxers in the past. But do these wins will make them really great in the boxing world?
I have been a boxing fan by both fighters. They have unique skills and styles which other great boxers didn’t have during their times, champions in the past who were not as great as them but were adored by many. They didn’t have championship belts (several weight classes) with them but were considered great by many.
Personally, attitude and behavior count in making a great boxer, in and out of the ring. People may remember boxers of their accomplishments in the ring but the question is how long will they talk about their accomplishents? People will remember you on how you behaved (acceptable or unacceptable). Boxing will be around for more long years and the next generation who will love the sport of boxing will soon talk about of the boxers today.
In the case of Floyd Jr, yes, they will talk of his great skills for a while, but they will focus more on how he behaved outside the ring. How he disrespected his father in front of the camera, how he talked back to his father grudgingly and disrespectfully, how he ordered his bodyguards to throw his father out of his own gym. Floyd Jr has issues with his father which should be settled off the camera. A father will always be a father to his son. Let’s face the fact that Floyd Sr might have done things that hurt Floyd Jr in the past, and I am sure that Floyd Sr did not mean to hurt Floyd Jr. I know Floyd is a smart person, he should be the first one to realize that. He should not disown his pop, because pop will never disown Floyd no matter what happens.Millions of people I’m sure saw what happened between them in that gym. Did those millions of people liked what they saw? NO!!! Floyd Jr made those millions of people hate him. A great fighter knows how to respect. The first person who deserves his respect is Floyd Sr.
Manny Pacquiao, never heard anything about him disrespecting his father. He respected his father, cared for him and had given his love. Pacquiao is not only known and adored by people because of his accomplishments in the ring. He is adored by millions because of his great respect to all, his good behavior outside the ring, his dedication to boxing and to his fans. He will be remembered by his accomplishments and will be considered great because of his good behavior towards the sports, to his fans and to his opponents.
Great skills,championship belts and good behavior= great boxer
Great skills, championship belts, a thug and bad behavior = a nobody
