Ortiz not ready for prime time
By John F. McKenna (McJack): Former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2-2, 22 KO’s) proved Saturday what many people already suspected. He is not ready for the big boys. “Vicious” was KO’d at the end of the 4th round by new WBC champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s).
Floyd has spent years cultivating his bad boy image. Why would anyone expect him to do anything different than what he did on Saturday in dispatching Ortiz? While many are upset with “Money” in the aftermath of his bout with Ortiz, he did nothing that was outside the rules.
It was thought by some after his exciting win over Andre Berto in April that Victor had arrived and was ready to take on a Mayweather or a Pacquiao. Obviously Ortiz was nowhere near ready for Floyd Mayweather. Floyd was his usual slick self, controlling the tempo of the fight and easily keeping “Vicious” at bay. In essence it was like Floyd had never been gone for sixteen months..
Unable to cope, Ortiz became frustrated and reverted to form. Near the end of the 4th round, he bulled Floyd into the ropes and came in head first with a head butt cutting Mayweather’s lip. Referee Joe Cortez immediately deducted a point from Ortiz, after which Victor began a series of apologizes. Ortiz went so far as to plant a kiss on Mayweather’s cheek. In a matter of seconds, Floyd would demonstrate in a savage way that he was not buying the apologies. Planting a kiss on Mayweather’s cheek was not the most intelligent thing for Ortiz to do either.
In short Victor forgot who he was fighting. Cortez had signaled for the fight to continue. Cortez is a well respected referee and has been involved in numerous championship fights. Ortiz seemingly oblivious to what was happening chose to act foolishly and left himself unprotected.
By his actions Ortiz demonstrated that he still needs to mature significantly as a fighter.
Only time will tell if he will ever be one of the premiere fighters in boxing.

this made boxing look bad floyed is a great boxer but he wouled have looked better beating ortiz the right way
yes, ortiz and many others is not ready for a rag tag/ ambush type or tap tap way of boxing. it is the same way as tyson bite the ear of his opponent because of too much holding. ortiz is like a sheep that cortez lead to the slaughter with out complain.
LMAO.
Still can’t accept that Floyd and Victor provided blood for USADA?
Damn. Filipinos all butthurt that Floyd can do what Pac-Joke the Catchweight Munchkin can’t. Because Filipinos are COWARDS when it comes to needles.
I never wanna see victor fight again I pray manny does not give him a chance ge don’t deserve it and his skills his whole game plan was broken all the way down and shut out Floyd was right you think it look easy until you in there. He’s dirty and got what he deserved. I only wanna watch great fighters from now on Floyd, manny,Sergio, khan,Gamboa and a few more but no Ortiz.
I began to like watching MMA, here you can see what is the meaning of SPORTMANSHIP try to watch MMA, if dont like to see Sportmanship then you watch WWE here you can see the scripted fight like you see last Sept. 18
So what does this say about Berto ?
Cortez and FMJ did their jobs. Ortiz didn’t. His butt was stupid, immature, and he got severely punished for it. He’s a dirty fighter. Period!
Don’t know about you guys, but IMO Cortez shouldn’t ref anymore fights…pro or amateur.
Floyd won with ko and he was leading on the 3 judges then where is the chance for ortiz?zero.oscar delahoya, arum ,roach and manny your so jealous of floyd.
As a Physician, I would like to offer my 2 step program to Roach, Pacquiao, and all of the future opponents that Floyd Mayweather Jr. faces in the future.
1) Be respectful when you fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. “Thank Floyd” gracefully for giving you the opportunity to face greatness. Never misbehave or you will “PAY”! ala..Ortiz.
2) Sit back and take the whoopin like a man, and after the fight, “Thank Floyd” again for whoopin your behind with such quickness, finesse, and grace.
Manny Pacquiao is up next. Take my 2 step program, and accept things the way they are and have to be…
Andrea Berto said that Ortiz was on some type of enhancment, I don’t know if I agree with that, but one thing I can say he looked totally different in the Mayweather fight than the Berto fight b/c of the random blood testing.
Why Mosley and Ortiz were smiling and seems happy after they lost to Floyd? I’m just wondering, hmmm!
On HBO face off money may said u make any mistakes u will have to pay! He wasn’t ready! Mayweather was whooping his azz all night! Up until that point!
Ortiz head not in the game. Good kid by intellect not there.
ortiz hasn’t the heart to be a champ. too soft mentally kind of gives up then laughs about it.
well written
and I completely agree. and I hope for mayweather vs martinez
Border hopper is a f a g b i t c h.
Its overall cortez fault. when u deduct a point you tell both fighters to go to the corner and then meet them in the middle of the ring. Cortez wasn’t finished talking to the outside judges then thats when floyd took advantage of ortiz cuz he didn’t have his hands up. Of course ur suppose to protect urself at all times but cortez cud have had both fighters in their corners when deducting a point.
im still waiting for joe cortez to say ok guys keep it clean then pull them together make them touch gloves push them apart then say box.i guess joe got hefnerized like in the wwe.
ramos
Pacman would not fight Ortiz. Victor Ortizs career is over.
*rematch. I hope pacquaio does not fight Ortiz after Marquez..please pacman dont fight money’s leftovers saying you will “beat him better”…but this is not unprecedented from what us fans have seen.
floyd mayweather is the joint best boxer ever lived ,hes no coward and he would take pacman apart rd by rd .
Ortiz will remarch berto next and the winner will vs mayweather in a unification bout IBF and WBC. Pacman vs mayweather will then hopefully happen middle or late 2013, at the earliest.
Maidana- Showed his mental side.
Berto- Looked like he conquered it, getting off the canvas.
PBF- Mentally collapsed by fouling.
The ref said “let’s go” not “fight on” and then looked away ignoring the fighters. Floyd was angry already and I guess he noticed Ortiz didn’t hear the ref. He clobbered the kid with a left hook straight right combo and sent Ortiz into dreanland…
Advice for Ortiz…the fight game is not “hugs and kisses”, the headbutt is part of boxing the hugs and kisses are not. Floyd should have hit him way harder.
Don’t think Ortiz will conquer the mental side of Boxing.
Pulled a Tyson.
I can’t complain, I didn’t buy the fight. I watched it on stream. If the paid writer said, it’s a legal punch, I won’t argue. Now Floyd needs to fight Pacquiao. There is no reason not fight him. He agreed to all Floyd’s OSDT demands. I will not call him a coward yet. He might fight Pacquiao.
It was a great way to win fan’s
mayweather said, i will fight the best fighter. right now there is only one in that posistion the pacman.. floyd always said take test the if your the best, pacman asnwered i’l take the test so that the fight will happen. floyd in post fight interview said, no need for me to fight pacman, i still ran more money fighting bum than risking of lossing to pacman. mentioning pacman, floyd suddenly rattled. what a coward. peace!
go away mcjack
ortiz career is over he will never get a big payday fight like that again he is still a rookie learn the game first befor you try to fight the big dogs
Ortiz is known for using his “third-boxing-tool”
within the boxer’s community. Head-Buts are part of his arsenal whenever true boxing does not work out.I am not a fan of PBF but he did what he is supposed to do once the referee calls to “fight-on”. Ortiz as a boxer loos favor with some fans after the way he quit on his first defeat. Since that time his promoters have nursed-him along to get where he is to get a big pay-off fight. As far as I am concern he is not in the caliber of other real contenders in the division. Maybe he should try Martial-Arts fighting since he already have a “Head-Start” going for him and in that field if he wants to quit early all he has to do is to tap-tap. He could there really Take the Money and Run!
I agree… in the first place, why would Floyd cherry pick someone who’s not in his caliber. Victor is just as good as a sparring partner of Pacquiao, nothing more. Floyd should have fought sergio instead. Floyd did the right thing but it doesnt change the fact that he’s a coward. Fight Martinez or Manny.
I agree fully with this article, Ortiz is a head case, Cortez signaled fight and Floyd fought, Ortiz was day dreaming about that kiss he gave Money May! LMAO
