Image: Martirosyan having second thoughts about fighting Angulo?By Eric Thomas: Number #1 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Vanes Matirosyan (30-0, 19 KO’s) is reportedly having second thoughts about facing the dangerous number #3 ranked WBC contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s), according to Steve Kim. In his twitter page, Kim said “It looks like Vanes Martirosyan is balking at the deal to face Alfred Angulo on Nov5 for some reason. We’ll see if someone can change or turn Vanes around. Right now, he may be Pavlik’ing his own career.”

Kim could be right about this. Martirosyan is making a huge mistake by avoiding Angulo, because this is a fight that would really give a shot of adrenalin to Matirosyan’s career. Right now, he’s only known among hardcore boxing fans. But if Matirosyan is able to defeat Angulo, he’ll be known by a lot more fans and it will help his career immensely. This is the best time for Matirosyan to take a fight with Angulo, because he’s coming off a year layoff and still hasn’t fought anyone good enough to test him.

Martirosyan would be a very dangerous fight for Angulo, and I think Martirosyan would have an excellent chance of beating him. Of course, if he doesn’t this fight the options for him are a less appealing right now. There’s Alfonso Gomez, Paul Williams, Erislandy Lara, Pawel Wolak, and Yudel Jhonson, but I doubt Martirosyan will get a shot against any of them in the short term.

The fighter that Martirosyan wants to figth is WBC title holder Saul Alvarez, but Matirosyan will have to wait until 2012 to fight him. Maybe his promoters at Top Rank don’t want to risk him against a dangerous Golden Boy Promotions fighter like Angulo right now.
