Khan wants Morales and also would like to add the World Boxing Council light welterweight title to his other two titles at light welterweight. Khan had been trying to fight Timothy Bradley when he was in possession of the WBC belt, but he showed no interest in making the fight. But now that the title has been stripped from Bradley by the WBC, Khan is interested in fighting the Cano-Morales winner.

“I’m sure it [Morales vs. Cano] will be a great fight nevertheless and it would be nice if I was to face the winner so I could get another world title,” Khan said to Primetime.co.uk. “I’ve beaten [Marco Antonio] Barrera and to beat Morales as well would be something very special.”

Khan beat Barrera, but it was the old version of Barrera, fighting several weight classes over his best weight class of the super bantamweight division where Barrera was a terror during his prime. Khan fought an old Barrera in his mid-thirties and not the same fighter. The fight was marred by a nasty cut Barrera suffered early in the fight, resulting him fighting nearly blind with blood in his eyes until the bout had gone just far enough for it to go to decision in the 5th. It was a win for Khan, but not quite the same thing as fighting a prime Barrera in an actual 12 round bout.

Morales is in the same boat. He’s 35, fighting three divisions over his best weight and not the same fighter he once was. Khan wants his name on his resume, but it’s hard to get excited about a prime Khan beating a past his prime Morales fighting three divisions over his best weight.

Khan was supposed to be moving up in weight to the welterweight division after he faces Peterson, his IBF mandatory challenger on December 10th. It’s unclear if Khan has had a change of mind about moving up right away. It looks like he’ll try to add the WBC paper title to his collection, even though neither Morales or Cano are considered to be very good fighters. Morales lost his last fight to Marcos Maidana, but was still picked by the WBC to fight for the vacant WBC title anyway.
