Fury’s promoter doesn’t want Mike Perez fight for Tyson

Image: Fury's promoter doesn't want Mike Perez fight for TysonBy Scott Gilfoid: Making a number of excuses why he doesn’t want to match his fighter British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (16-0, 11 KO’s) with unbeaten heavyweight contender Mike Perez (16-0, 12 KO’s), promoter Mick Hennessy says “He’s not in our plans.”

The fighters that are in Fury’s immediate plans are 40-year-old Martin Rogan and Canadian Neven Pajkic (16-0, 5 KO’s), a non-puncher. What does that tell you? I smell fear from Fury’s camp. I guess Perez, a very good fighter, is considered too dangerous for the 6’9″ Fury at this point. But I think it’s understandable.

We just saw Fury get staggered by journeyman Nicolai Firtha last Saturday night, and Firtha doesn’t have big power and wasn’t throwing any punches. Can you imagine what a non-stop puncher like Perez would have done to Fury had he been in there with him? Picture Fury’s fight with Dereck Chisora but with Chisora throwing 70 to 80 more punches per round than he did in his fight with Fury – and with power.

Fury would be in deep, deep trouble if he were to fight Perez and so for that reason, I can understand why Hennessy isn’t eager to put him in with the Cuban slugger. He’s too good. Perez would set a high pace and wear Fury down in five or six rounds. Fury looks uncomfortable if you throw 20 punches per round, let alone 80 to 100 like Perez.

I saw Fury amateurishly turning his head to the side when Firtha was throwing shots, as if bracing for the impact. I don’t see professionals doing that kind of move and if he were to fight Perez, it would be shocking how easily he would beat Fury I think. But of course we’re not going to see that. Fury will probably get matched against Pajkic or maybe the 40-year-old Rogan in another mismatch.
