De La Hoya previously fought Mayweather in 2007, and is well aware of the talent that he possesses. However, De La Hoya still sees the much younger 24-year-old Ortiz will come out on top against Mayweather.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that Victor will win,” De La Hoya said as quoted by fightnews.com.

De La Hoya is very proud of how far Ortiz has come with his career. It was only two years ago that a lot of boxing fans had given up on Ortiz after he quit in the 6th round against the hard hitting Marcos Maidana. That fight turned a many would be fans against Ortiz and caused them to see him a quitter. Many fans still feel this way even though Ortiz has won five out of the last six fights since then.

Ortiz’s 10 round draw with Lamont Peterson last year in December was a controversial one because a lot of fans saw Ortiz winning that fight. The HBO crew televising the fight had Ortiz winning, as did I.

Mayweather is a huge 7-1 favorite to win this fight. Ortiz is going to have to prove people wrong again just like he did in his last fight against former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto last April. Using a high work rate, Ortiz was able to out-work Berto and cause him to tire out late in the fight by using a fast pace to wear him down.
