Dawson is reportedly saying the real reason he stopped training with Steward is because he felt he had to go back to his former fighting style in order to have a good chance of beating WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins on October 15th.

Dawson looked uncomfortable fighting in the straight up fighting style that Steward wanted him to in the one fight he had under Steward’s direction against Adrian Diaconu last May. Dawson threw mostly jabs and one punch at a time and looked incredibly stiff and uncomfortable using that style. It didn’t take a genius to see that it was a bad style for Dawson. While Steward has worked wonders with tall fighters like Tommy Hearns, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko, it was a bad style for Dawson, who is more of a combination puncher.

Dawson can’t beat a fighter like Hopkins throwing only jabs and one punch at a time. That style would only work for Dawson if he had Klitschko or Hearns type power, but unfortunately Dawson isn’t a huge puncher at light heavyweight. He can punch, but he’s not someone that crushes his opponents with one shot.

Since Dawson left Steward recently there’s been a lot of second guessing of Dawson with many boxing fans thinking he made the wrong choice before the Hopkins fight. To be sure, the timing would appear to be bad because there’s very little time before the October 15th Dawson vs. Hopkins fight. However, Dawson is back with his old trainer John Scully, who Dawson had the best luck with during his years with him. Dawson was knocking everyone out while being trained by Scully, and since he left him, Dawson has had to settle for winning his fights by decision.
