Cleverly, however, has to get by his next opponent Tony Bellew, who Cleverly faces on the same night as the Hopkins-Dawson fight.

Cleverly said this to BBC Sport: “That would be a dream fight [against Hopkins] for me. Those are the fights you dream of.”

Cleverly may have to settle for Dawson, though, in an equally bad matchup for him. Facing the 46-year-old Hopkins would be a nightmare for Cleverly, as Hopkins is so much better than Cleverly and every opponent he’s ever faced before. But Dawson would also be a huge mismatch because his speed, power and boxing skills. Cleverly will have it tough no matter which one of those two fighters he ends up facing.

Warren said “What we’re looking for is the winner of Nathan and Tony to fight the winner of Hopkins and Dawson for a big fight. It could be that Nathan wins, Hopkins wins. We may be in a position where we’re at the Millenium Stadium [in Wales] in the new year.”

Not so fast. I don’t think Hopkins would ever go for fighting in the UK. That’s a nonstarter. Dawson probably won’t go for it either. He’ll likely opt to stay in the U.S and fight someone else if Cleverly isn’t interested in coming over there to take the fight, but I don’t see him being willing to fly over to Wales and fight in front of a huge stadium filled with Cleverly supporters and risk losing a hometown decision.
