Richard Schaefer, Broner’s promoter, is looking at matching Broner up with the 25-year-old inexperienced Tomlinson for the title, according to news from Dan Rafael at ESPN.

This fight, if it gets made, figures to be a huge mismatch because Tomlinson doesn’t have the experience against quality opposition that Broner has and doesn’t appear to be anywhere close to Broner in the skills department. Tomlinson can punch a little, but he’s not as fast as Broner and looks to be a big step down from Broner’s last fight against Jason Litzau. Broner stopped Litzau in the 1st round in June.

Tomlinson has been fighting largely B and C level fighters from the 2nd tier his entire three year pro career. You’d like to have seen Tomlinson at least have fought one or two top contenders before being matched against a guy as good as Broner for a title. It almost seems unfair to Tomlinson to throw him in with a guy like Broner, who he has very little chance of beating.

Broner was hoping to fight former champion Ricky Burns, but he vacated the WBO title shortly after the Broner-Burns fight started being talked about. Burns has since moved up in weight. An arguably better fight for Broner would be against unbeaten #3 WBO contender Eloy Perez. However, he wants to be paid well before he agrees to take on Broner.
