Image: Adamek says he'll end his career as a heavyweight, refuses to move down to cruiserweightBy Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) was badly beaten in a one-sided 10th round TKO defeat to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko earlier this month on September 10th in a loss that pretty much showed that Adamek didn’t have the size or the ability to compete against the much bigger 6’7″ Vitali.

Instead of getting a clue and realizing that he’ll never be good enough to beat Vitali or his brother IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, the 34-year-old Adamek says he’ll continue to fight at heavyweight until he retires at some point in the future. In an interview at fightnews.com, Adamek says he’ll continue to fight the best of the heavyweights no matter how big they are.

That sounds good, but Adamek won’t likely get another title shot for at least a year at best. He turns 35 in December, and I can’t see Adamek getting another crack at a title before his 36th birthday. Wladimir Klitschko already said he has zero interest in fighting the small 6’1″ Adamek after watching how easy it was for his brother Vitali to beat the Pole.

Wladimir doesn’t see it as an exciting or competitive fight, and doesn’t want to beat up Adamek like his brother did. Adamek is only ranked highly by the World Boxing Council, meaning that he could wind up fighting Vitali again if Vitali decides to stick it out another year. Obviously, Adamek is hoping to wait him out until Vitali retires from boxing and then Adamek can swoop in and fight for the vacant WBC title against whatever is ranked high enough to fight him.

Right now, it’s Chris Arreola at number #2, but that could change in a year or two. The worst case scenario for Adamek would be one where a giant heavyweight like Robert Helenius were to be ranked at number #1 or #2, and Adamek would have to fight him for the vacant title. I’ve seen enough of Helenius to know that Adamek wouldn’t stand a chance against him, and probably wouldn’t do well against a healthy Arreola either.

If Vitali decides to continue fighting for another year, we could see Adamek facing Vitali again and getting torn apart once more. Vitali is so much better than Adamed that Vitali could realistically continue fighting until he’s past 50 and still whip Adamek without any problems. That would be a scary thought. Hopefully, Adamek doesn’t continue fighting at heavyweight too much longer because he’s wasting his best years fighting in a division that he doesn’t have the size or the talent to be competitive in.
