Tyson Fury needs a good opponent to keep moving up
By Sean McDaniel: Undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (15—0, 10 KO’s) is really starting to make a name for himself after defeating British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora by a lopsided 12 round decision recently.
After the victory, the charismatic Fury could have easily fought for a world title against IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who was anxious to get Fury in the ring for one of his stadium fights either in Germany or the UK.
However, Fury decided not to take the fight in order to continue to slowly grow as a fighter. There’s been talk of Fury fighting 40-year-old Martin Rogan, Neven Pajkic, Michael Perez and David Price.
What Fury needs is someone like Perez or Price so that he can continue to learn and evolve as a fighter. Taking an older heavyweight isn’t going to give the 6’9” Fury much because he’s too good for someone like Rogan.
Fury has got to take on guys that will challenge him. The thing is the management for the 23-year-old Fury can’t afford to wait too long before stepping him up a level because there are other heavyweight contenders who are ready to move in and hog the spotlight if Fury isn’t able to make a step up. That’s the fact.
If Fury doesn’t make a move he’s going to be forgotten about, because no one wants to see him fighting 3rd tier heavyweights or guys that are into their 40s.
Fury has been working with trainer Emanuel Steward and he’s made great strides with his help, but he needs to continue to learn so that he can one day compete with the Klitschkos or take over once they retire from boxing.

Fury was right not to take the Klitschko fight, because right now, he hasn’t got the experience, skill, and is too fat to fight him. Its good he’s being realistic, biding his time, so that in a few years he’ll be more experienced and skillful, and probably still fat. He’ll never be good enough to take on a Klitschko, so should make enough money and continue his career as long as is suitable.
fury is a very limited fighter in boxing terms, he seems unable to fully use his advantages, and is still half a stone too heavy around the waist, which to me is indicative of a lazy trainer, sadly for him his type of boxer soon gets found out by a truly hungery fighter
hide the kids Fury is looking for everyone noone is safe.
I have to disagree with the author. Too many young fighters have had their careers ruined by moving up too fast. Fury has power but needs to develop his skills. At 23, there’s plenty of time for him to step up. If Tyson trains under Manny Steward, he’ll be gradually moved along like his cousin, Andy Lee. He can fight a Perez or Price, but also take on some old pros like Hoffman, Grant, or Harrison in between to enhance his style. Fury needs at least two more years and 9 more bouts before he reaches the level of either Klitchko.
He would loose to arreola. Think the camp should try again wiv rogan
Tyson Fury is the world’s best heavyweight. just watch and see. hide the wonan and kids Fury is coming and none is safe.
Australia’s Alex Leapai
Price ko’s Tyson if they fight
I think it’s admirable that Fury is willing to go looking for unbeaten up-and-comer’s and in Perez and Price he’d be taking on the best the British Isles has to offer. However, I’m of the opinion that he should fight someone of Harrison’s ilk, a ‘name’ that he’d no doubt beat easily, would add a bit of experience and would help to pad his record and attract other bigger names down the road. I really like Perez, he’s got something about him and it’d be a tough fight that I’m not sure would end up in a win for Fury, a later meeting when they’re both 25-0 would be a belter. One more thing… doesn’t Price have to take on McDermott for a chance at Fury? Can’t see why Price would be allowed to skip him…
fury has a refreshing approach to this game if he fights perez after chisora, then i take my hat off to him to undefeated fighters with decent records, unlike haye giving fraudley a world title shot, do me a favour…….
I would like to see him fight perez and save to price fight for a year or 2 when they are both contenders on the world stage, if i was his manager i would look for someone like arreola, think fury would easily outbox him and would be a big name on his record.
How about the amercan who only fight cuzerwights I’ve heard he’s mention to be the next big thing ha ha ha
hes 2 big 4 perez! be the same as the chisora fight IMO. David price would be a good fight 2 c who the number 1 british prospect is tho but neither is even close 2 a klitchko. Still think Haye is by far the best british heavyweight around, even if he couldnt beat wladimir.
Good article, I agree Price or Perez should be next, from what I’ve read it looks like Perez will get it which wont be an easy fight but he could learn a lot from fighting guys of that caliber
