Image: The New Season Begins in the UK: Froch, Cleverly, Burns, More!By Adam Fillingham: Photo: Casino/Showtime – So the new season is about to begin and what a great line up we have in store. With four world champions in Carl Froch, Amir Khan, Nathan Cleverly and Ricky Burns, a hand full of European champions, world contenders and some domestic scraps this could be the best season yet. Sky Sports will as usual lead the way but channels Primetime, channel 5 and Euro-sports may catch up with sky in the next eleven months.

The World Champions

Light welterweight champion Amir Khan will be returning to the ring in December against a so far unknown opponent. The fighter in the opposite corner will most likely be Mexican legend Eric Morales although a fight against Lamont Patterson is also likely.

Carl Froch will be hoping to complete the Super Six tournament as the victor on the 29th of October in Atlantic City. The Nottingham fighter will be taking on world number one Andre Ward and although the “Cobra” is coming in as the underdog it will be a cracking fight.

Nathan Cleverly is the newly crowned WBO light heavyweight champion but unfortunately won his title in unlucky style. With the withdrawal of Juergen Braehmer and the late replacement Tony Bellew coming in overweight the Welshman was almost given the belt in his fight with Aleksy Kuziemski. The always entertaining Welshman is currently looking for a fight with fellow Brit Tony Bellew.

The final world champion is Scotsman Ricky Burns who after three successful defences of his WBO super featherweight title is looking for a career defining fight. Two fighters have stuck out as possibilities; American Adrien Broner and South African Mzonke Fana. Although Burns isn’t the most gifted fighter in the world I think his will to win and boxing skills could be enough to get him past both fighters.

The heavyweight Scene

There has been a lot of talk about this new crop of heavyweights from the UK and although our last big hope (Mr Haye I hope you’re reading) failed to deliver, this next generation could be even bigger. Tyson Fury is the number one at the minute claiming the British and Commonwealth titles a few months ago but there are many other names including David Price, (eleven fights undefeated) Derek Chisora, (lost his British belt to Fury but don’t bet against a BIG comeback) and Richard Towers (undefeated but unheard of). Other names come to mind such as Sam Sexton, Audley Harrison, John McDermott, Tom Dallas and Martin Rogan and although this bunch will never likely contend for a world title at this point, there could be some cracking dust ups.

The Contenders

The are many boxers from the UK lining up big money fights with world champions this season. Already on the horizon is Darren Barker’s fight with P4P number three Sergio Martinez and Tony Bellew’s October bout with Nathan Cleverly. Sheffield pugilist Kell Brook will hopefully line up a world shot this season and the same goes for Essex fighter Kevin Mitchell and Brummy Matthew Macklin. Expect title shots for Matthew Hatton, Gavin Rees and Brian Magee too.

The Domestic Scene

With so many exciting fighters in the domestic scene this season I could not list them all, but here are a selection of the fights that could happen;

Tyson Fury Vs David Price
Paul McCloskey vs. Breidis Prescott
Gary Sykes Vs Gary Buckland
Richard Towers Vs Tom Dallas
Brian Magee Vs George Groves/James Degale
Tony Jefferies Vs Danny McIntosh
Denton Vassell Vs John O’Donnell
Ryan Walsh Vs Stephen Smith

The list could go on so lets get excited about the next season of boxing in the UK! With the right match making it will be the best yet.
