Image: Prediction: Mayweather vs. Ortiz could make #4 on the list of top PPV boxing eventsBy Chris Williams: With the marketing of Floyd Mayweather’s September 17th fight against WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s), which will have HBO’s 24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz series shown on CNN, this fight could very well make it to the number #4 spot in the list of the highest boxing pay-per-view bouts of all time. Mayweather’s fight against Shane Mosley reached 1.4 in 2010, and that was without the help of CNN.

However, with HBO’s 24/7 Mayweather-Ortiz series being replayed on CNN, I can see this this fight bringing in 1.6 million PPV buys. That number will take it past the current No.4 fight between Evander Holyfield in 1996, which brought in a hefty 1.59 million PPV buys. Those are respectable numbers for a fight where Mayweather is fighting someone that’s not considered a huge star yet. Ortiz is still a couple of years away from mega stardom. However, it only takes Mayweather’s name to make a huge PPV event.

Mayweather can be pretty much matched up against anyone and his fights will he huge PPV sellers. Mayweather already holds the top spot on the all time PPV sale list with his 2.4 million buys for his fight against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

What makes the Mayweather-Ortiz fight so great is that it’s a competitive fight and not just one of your regular run of the mill mismatches that we’ve been seeing in the last three years from the fights of Manny Pacquiao being matched up against Top Rank stable fighters like Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto. Ortiz can fight and won’t be hampered by a catchweight. Mayweather won’t need a catchweight handicap to beat Ortiz.
