Narvaez the likely next opponent for Donaire
By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is reportedly likely to fight undefeated Argentinian Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO’s) in his next fight in November.
The other guys that Donaire has been considering aren’t all that appealing due to a lack of name recognition and recent losses. What makes Narvaez so appealing is he’s unbeaten, can take a punch and has excellent power. He’s also got an exciting fighting style which includes a lot of action.
This is what Donaire needs is someone that won’t fold immediately when the going gets tough like Donaire’s last opponent Fernando Montiel, who Donaire destroyed in the 2nd round last February.
However, there’s a danger in choosing Narvaez. He can punch and he can take a shot. If Narvaez can stay on his feet, he could potentially beat Donaire. As we saw in Donaire’s fight against Rafael Concepcion in 2009, Donaire has problems with guys that hit hard and put a lot of pressure on him.
Concepcion had no problems blocking or taking Donaire’s left hooks, and was able to get in close and really punish Donaire. Finally, Donaire had to run for his life to survive that fight, and looked really poor in that fight. We could see the same with Narvaez if he can take Donaire’s shots.
Donaire is good at punching someone but very vulnerable when they’re slugging him back. That has to be a concern here for Donaire and his management team, because they’ve got a good fighter that they want to make into a big star. Narvaez can spoil things for them by destroying Donaire and ruining his management’s plans.

@oxo, nice one; Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.
The entrance song of Omar will be “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”…
@ Hindsight 20/10
Your right on dude. I dont understand what everyone is talking about, this dude is to divison under Donaire and has never fought out side of Argentina, plus he’s old.
TOTAL MISMATCH
Sorry I stand corrected El Huracan has a record of 35-0…whatever. Still hasn’t fought out of Argentina.
@fromBuenosAires – “cannot shock him In the first two to three rounds, Donaire will be in trouble” – Really, are you serious!!! Honestly think what Donaire did to Monteil in the 2nd round wasn’t shocking? El Huracan hasn’t fought out of Argentina…EVER!!! He has a KO% 51.35 he’s 36y/o and Narvaez will be going against the #3 P4P fighter in the world. Yes, that being Donaire. And you still think El Huracan has a chance should this fight ever be inked? Whatever helps you sleep at night buddy. IMO, Donaire via KO or TKO in the 3rd rnd (ala Montiel).
Donaire by being younger and bigger.
Omar will at least make a good name, he is probably the most skilled in flyweight, i expect an excellent fight against donaire
Anselmo is the WBA champ, not WBC.
Problems for Narvaez is age and weight. He will not punch hard at that division. Problems for Nonito are that Narvaez is very clever, excellent skills(perhaps one of most talented fighters today) and like says @fromBuenosAires he is masterful strategist in the ring. All in all, this writer said all the other way around about Narvaez!!
I understand that, looking from the States, it may look like a mismatch. But I’ve seen Narváez, with just one hand (the other hurt and useless), totally outboxes a dangerous challenger, for many rounds, in the backyard of the challenger. Plus Narváez is fighting now in jr. bantamweight.
With this kind of opponent, it is very obvious that Arum is putting Donaire in the freezer. After blasting Montiel in 2 in las vegas he goes to Home Depot in Carson for his next fight. Thats a clear demotion.
Are you serious? this is a big mis match. Navarez is 2 divisions under Donaire!
BIG MISMATCH
Narváez is a bit past his prime, and will be fighting two divisions up his real weight. But he is addicted to the gym. He loves the gym and is always well trained. He is also very intelligent devising his plan as the fight progressed. He usually takes the first two or three rounds to decipher the style of his opponent, and then to adjust his own plan. If Donaire can’t shock him in these two or three first rounds, he could well be in serious trouble.
NO SWEAT!
