Maidana still without an opponent for August 27th date

By Dan Ambrose: WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) is without an opponent for his previously scheduled fight date on August 27th. Maidana was supposed to be fighting Robert Guerrero, but he injured his left shoulder during a sparring session this week and won’t be able to make the fight.

Golden Boy Promotions, who handles Maidana, are trying to find a last minute replacement but haven’t had much luck. Former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto was reportedly asked to step in and fight Maidana, but he declined. Soto recently moved up to light welterweight because of his problems making the 135 pound lightweight limit.

It’s disappointing to see him turning down a title shot against Maidana, because the objective is to try and get a title shot. Who knows if Soto will ever make it into a title fight given that he’s fighting at a new weight against bigger fighters. Maidana said he’d like to fight Amir Khan again if he were interested, but he’s not feeling that fight.

It’s looking like Maidana may have to scrap the August 27th date and wait until a new opponent or Guerrero’s injury heals before he can fight again. That’s sad because Maidana put in a lot of time in training camp and now he’ll have nothing to show for it. Maidana hasn’t fought since defeating Erik Morales by a 12 round decision last April. Maidana fought well at times but seemed to tire in the middle rounds and let the older Morales have more moments than he probably deserved to. Maidana is better than what he showed in that fight and he’s going to prove once he starts getting some good fights.

Maidana will be soon fighting the winner of the September 10th WBA light welterweight eliminator fight between Paul McCloskey and Breidis Prescott. That’s going to be an interesting fight if Prescott comes out on top, because Prescott previously holds a 1st round knockout win over Amir Khan. He has good power and likes to slug. A fight between Maidana and Prescott could be one of the best fights of 2011 if it can be made.

Stupid pathetic Argy someone should have shot his mother in 1982

  • Guillermo says:

After the Khan fight, Marcos is on the same boat as Sergio Martinez… who in the world would want to risk fighting him?… he is the most devastating puncher in his division, the one up and the one down.

  • the rabbit says:

everybody is scared of Maidana’s will & power …. anyway I would like to see a rematch with Morales & Ortiz, if that will happen :)

  • lost says:

Nobody wants to fight maidana anyway because he’s an absolute monster. You’d have to have a death wish to take that one on less than 2 weeks notice. I can see that getting cancelled

  • bazooka says:

What’s up Freddie scared the golden goose will get cooked if you give Maidana a well deserved rematch withe Bolton boy.Get it on soon it’s what the paying public want.

  • cab for Mr_____ says:

  • mccoy says:

    Katsidas will fight him

  • vicious beast says:

Im not a Guerrero fan but did have my ticket ready, if you guys ( from buenos aires) think maidana is so great why did he not give Ortiz a rematch, now he expects Khan to give him one. I think Lucas Mathysse will spank this kid.

Maidana is fighting in September 16 in Villa Ballester, Buenos Aires. Challenger to confirm.

The whole Card has been cancelled ,Maidanna won’t be fighting anybody on 8/27

you would have to be absolutely crazy to take a fight with maidana with less than 2 weeks notice!

  • Anonymous says:

None at 140 are eager to fight Maidana………..The Khan man never want’s to get in there with him again….Bradley ,even with his Bowling Ball head want’s no part of him either ,and apparently Gurrerro doesn’t either

  • stugots says:

    Fully agree with BuenosAires

  • FromBuenosAires says:

…and Guerrero’s injury is a shameless lie. Period.

  • FromBuenosAires says:

At least Maidana had enough time of work with Rudy Pérez, which he hadn’t in his previous fight. This is good, because if he improves some things in the way he fights, he will beat anybody at 140 lb, including Khan and Bradley.

  • hop says:

    Prescott

  • Gareth UK says:

Why hasnt Paul McCloskey and Breidis Prescott stepped forward ? I dont get it.
