Image: Berto vs. Zaveck: Jan has got some decent sparring partners but will still loseBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 KO’s) reportedly has some capable top welterweight contenders serving as sparring partners for him to get ready for his September 3rd fight against former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KO’s) at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. But this is a fight that goes beyond sparring partners.

It doesn’t matter if Floyd Mayweather Jr was the 35-year-old Zaveck’s sparring partner for his entire training camp. It comes down to basic talent, and Berto has too much talent for Zaveck to overcome no matter who’s in there with him sparring with him. All it means is that he’s going to have a few wars during his training camp, that’s all. According to the latest news, Zaveck will be sparring with Selcuk Aydin, Joel Julio and Rafal Jackiewicz.

I’m sorry, but that’s not good enough to make one bit of difference for the outcome of this fight. Zaveck will just get beaten up a little in camp, and will be lucky if he makes it into the September 3rd fight without suffering one kind of injury or another. I can just see it. Zaveck getting busted up during sparring, causing the fight to be either cancelled or delayed. I hope they put extra large gloves and extra padding on Zaveck’s head gear because he’s going to need it in a big way to keep from getting beaten up during camp.

Berto lost his last fight to Victor Ortiz, but it was close and could have turned in his favor had Berto a little more gas in the fuel tank. Zaveck has been dining on fodder since winning his International Boxing Federation title in 2009. He’s beaten Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez, Jackiewicz and Paul Delgado. Just looking at that bunch, I’d have to say this is going to be a first class slaughter. Berto is going to cream this guy without any problems next month.
