Image: Angulo annihilates Gomez, Martirosyan nextBy Dan Ambrose: No.2 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s) breezed through a badly over-matched Joseph Gomez (17-5-1, 8 KO’s) in stopping him in the 1st round on Saturday night to claim the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas light middleweight title at the Nido Sport Center in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

From Angulo’s perspective, he really didn’t that many punches in the fight. He slowly followed Gomez around eating a lot jabs to the head before catching up to him near the ropes and hitting him with a right to the midsection, right to the back of the head followed by a left to the midsection that put Gomez down. The referee Jose Cobian then pinned Gomez to the ropes when he got up and halted the fight at 1:24 of the round.

It’s hard to get much from this fight because Gomez went down so easily. Angulo honestly needs at two or three fights against guys that can actually fight rather than going from this nothing fight into a bout against the number #1 ranked WBC contender Vanes Martirosyan. Unfortunately that looks like it’s going to be the next move for Angulo. I think it’s not wise because this wasn’t a tune-up; this was a slaughter of someone that shouldn’t have been in the ring with Angulo in the first place.

The WBC has already ordered a mandatory eliminator between Angulo and Martirosyan with the winner of the fight becoming the mandatory challenger for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. I can’t see Angulo winning that fight. Gomez was giving Angulo problems with his movement and jabbing before the knockdown occurred. Martirosyan will do the same thing only he won’t go down from a body shot form Angulo. He’ll keep moving and jabbing and win a fairly easy points decision. Angulo is just too slow. He only does well if you stop in front of him and stand there. Martirosyan won’t do that and will win a decision against Angulo just as Kermit Cintron did.

During last night’s fight, Gomez circled the ring tagging the slow moving Angulo with jab after jab to the head. He had no problems hitting him in the face it was like he was the quality fighter and Angulo was some nothing guy. Gomez’s mistake was when he just stopped and backed up to the ropes. It was a stupid move and it allowed Angulo to have his opportunity to land. If not for that unwise move, Gomez would have easily won the first round.

I can’t I’m impressed with Angulo. This was the first fight for him since last year in July, and he looks to be the same slow fighter he was back then. He’s good against guys that can’t move but you put him in with a boxer with a decent chin to take an occasional shot and he flounders. Martirosyan will beat him, as will champion Saul Alvarez.
