By Dan Ambrose: 34-year-old heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) doesn’t feel that size is important in his fight on September 10th against the much bigger 6’7″ WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s).

Adamek, 6’2″, thinks his great heart and determination will be enough for him to prevail in this fight despite the evidence showing that Adamek is an inexperienced peck and run fighter at heavyweight. He’s not shown any heart because he hasn’t had to due to the weak opposition that has been put in with him most of the time.

It’s easy to look good when you’re facing a 42-year-old Andre Golota, 38-year-old Kevin McBride, 38-year-old Michael Grant and 36-year-old Vinny Maddalone. Those are just a few of the people Adamek has been dining on to get the title shot against Klitschko. It looks as if Adamek has taken the back door to a title shot, and that’s too bad. There’s a reason why fighters are brought along slowly against increasingly better opposition until stepping it up against a champion.

What Adamek has done is shoot low and stay low with his opponents to get the title shot against Vitali. You can call record padding or whatever, but what it amounts to being is Adamek not properly prepared for the Vitali fight. Sorry but putting Adamek in with old slow guys like McBride and Grant are not adequate preparation for a fight against Vitali unless you want it to be a mismatch with Vitali easily beating Adamek.

Adamek said this in a recent conference call: “I know how to beat Vitali…He will not get a fighter standing in front of him, waiting for execution and payday. He will get somebody with no fear and the will and skills to win.”

Adamek is putting out mixes messages. On one hand he’s saying he hopes Vitali comes to fight because he wants it to be a brawl, but on the other he’s saying he’s not going to just stand in front of him. That suggests that Adamek is going to run around the ring with usual run and peck style of fighting. That’ loser game plan for the Vitali fight, but I guess it’s all Adamek can do.
