#2 WBC ranked Arreola could find himself in a rematch with Vitali soon

By Dan Ambrose: If IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko doesn’t select contender Chris Arreola (33-2, 28 KO’s) to fight in his next bout in December, Arreola, ranked #2 by the World Boxing Council, will soon find himself back in with Wladimir’s older brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s).

With No.1 ranked Tomasz Adamek fighting Vitali next month on September 10th, Arreola will naturally move to the #1 spot after Adamek gets knocked out or badly beaten. This means that Arreola will likely be back in against Vitali soon. If you saw the last time Arreola fought Vitali it wasn’t a competitive fight. It wasn’t even slightly competitive, as Arreola was too slow, short and unskilled to do much against the taller Vitali.

Now two years later and a few pounds lighter, Arreola still figures to have little chance at beating Vitali. It will probably be just as much a mismatch as the first time around, and that’s too bad. Arreola hasn’t beaten anyone of note since the loss to Vitali. Arreola has beaten six out of his last seven opponents, losing to Adamek by a 12 round decision in April 2010.

Arreola’s wins have all come against B and C level heavyweights. He doesn’t look any better than he did when he lost to Vitali. He only looks lighter and considerably weaker due to the weight that he’s taken off.

Wladimir Klitschko is kind of in the same boat as Vitali, as he’s going to have to fight guys like Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers and Ruslan Chagaev sooner or later. Wladimir has previously knocked out all three within the last three years. None of them has improved since their loss to Wladimir, and rematches with them will likely be even more one-sided than the first time around.
