Should Haye ditch Booth and sign on Roach?

By William Mackay: Take one look at how awkward and amateurish David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) looked against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Kltischko in Haye’s 12 round decision loss on July 2nd and it tells all you need to know about the chances of Haye beating Wladimir in a rematch. It’s probably not even realistic to talk rematch between those two fighters, because Haye isn’t remotely interested in working for a rematch.

Haye just wants it to be given to him based on the fact that it would make more money for Wladimir than if he were to fight anyone else. That’s probably true. Of course, Wladimir would likely more money by fighting 49-year-old Evander Holyfield rather than someone else, but that doesn’t mean Wladimir is desperate enough to fight for money only.

But with Haye not open to fighting a couple of fights against some top contenders to give the appearance that he’s at least trying to improve and redeem himself, he needs to consider losing his trainer Adam Booth. When you look as bad as a fighter like Haye did you really got to consider dumping the trainer that taught you the style that had you stinking up the joint.

Haye looks like he’s one of those fighters that really doesn’t know how to fight. He looks more like someone that had gotten over in spite of a lack of good training based on his power and quick reflexes. However, fast reflexes and power can take you only so far in boxing before you run into someone where you actually need to know the fundamentals. Sadly, Haye is lacking in the technical side of the game.

Since he doesn’t want to fight anyone, he needs to dump Booth and talk a trainer like Roach into taking him under his wing for a rematch with Wladimir. Roach is already high on Haye and sees himself as an excellent heavyweight, so it shouldn’t be difficult for Haye to take Roach into training him for one fight only. All Roach has to do is teach Haye how to box and come up with a strategy that he can use to take out Wladimir.

Even if it’s all just a bluff, Haye can at least get enough people to buy into it where they’ll want to pay to see him fight Wladimir again. I think this is the best option for Haye, because you’ve got to show that you’ve made some kinds of changes and one way of doing that is to let Booth retire and take on Roach.
