Roach: Khan is really hurting my ribs

By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Freddie Roach is really working up a lather bellyaching about how his fighter WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is hurting him with body shots through Roach’s body pads while Khan is working out. Roach is talking highly about Khan’s power to the body, making it seem as if Khan is a power puncher instead of a hit and run slapper.

Here is what Roach is saying about Khan’s power shots at the express.co.uk: “I will have to buy a new body bag protection against his punches. Amir is really hurting me, digging me in the ribs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Oh brother, this is too funny. Look how dramatic Roach is about Khan’s shots. Gee, I wonder if Roach ever thought of hiring a younger guy to do the dirty work like holding pads so that aging Roach can do more important things like give advice while Khan is pounding on a bag. Roach needs to get smart and let some young guy to do menial labor stuff while Roach gives pointers. I don’t think Khan is a big puncher, but I do think Roach is getting up there in age and getting pounded to the body by anyone, even a light puncher, is going to leave you feeling horrible after awhile. Instead of crying about his ribs, Roach needs to hire someone to hold mitts, body bags and whatever else stuff that involves Roach getting tagged. He’s getting up there in age and I think it would be better for his fighters to have a young guy that can move around better than Roach to hold the bags and/or mitts. If I was a fighter, I’d weird about Roach holding the mitts or the bags for me. I’d want to take it easy on him and I think I wouldn’t get much from the training.

Khan faces International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) on Saturday night in a make or break fight for Khan. If Khan loses the fight, he can forget about getting a big cash out payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr next year. That’s all Khan has been talking about for the past year, and a lot of boxing fans see this as Khan just wanting to get the fight and the payday that comes with it. No one is really giving him any chance against Mayweather, and it would be surprising if even Khan believes he can win. But Judah can take away Khan’s dream fight by knocking him out on Saturday night.

When the going gets tough Judah becomes his own worst enemy. I see Judah having some early success, but once Khan begins cranking up his output I think Judah will likely get frustrated and holster some of his most essential weapons. If that happens then Khan will flurry and maneuver his way to a UD or TKO victory.

  • tonz says:

As much as I respect Judah’s talent, he’s always been hit or miss for me. The man is a naturally gifted boxer with beautiful technique when he’s putting things together properly. I have seen improvements in Judah since he’s been with Whitakar. Unfortunately I also see remnants of the old Judah as well. My problem with Judah in big fights has never been can he win, rather, will he?

@ Anonymous… You are making a big generalization about American’s.. Many American don’t like Judah or Khan.. Many Americans like Pacquiao who is not an American, and many Americans like Lennox Lewis who is British..

Just for the record here is why people don’t like Khan (Boxing fans in general, including Americans, British, Latinos are who ever else follows boxing)… Khan walks around like he’s somehow in an elitist league in boxing.. He challenges fighters, and when they don’t give him the time of day he tries to claim to they are afraid of him.!? Really– Khan challenged Marquez at 140, instead of 135, when Marquez is the three time world champion and future hall of famer, then tries to say that Marquez is afraid of him. Laughable– Marquez is a living legend to the sport of boxing… There have a been a few fights that have been dissapointing inwhich it was clear that something funny was going on… In the Barrera fight, Barrera was allowed to fight with blood drenching his face with a head butt, then the fight goes to the cards and Khan wins by TKO.. WTF is that… In the Maidana fight, Maidana was not allowed to fight in the inside– what ever happened to fight and get out??? Also in round 10, Khan clearly turns his back on Maidana, like if he’s walking away from his punches, and Cortez still allows the fight to go on.. I would actually have more respect for Khan if he rematched Maidana (by the way, all great fights end up in trilogies. Ali, Frazie, Chaves, Taylor, Gatti Ward, Morales, Barrera….. Khan is not in that league ………. We all saw the Mccloskey fight and now that was a joke….

So yeah, I actually don’t like Judah… But I don’t like Khan even more. Simply as that.

Another complete useless article from the fat man it baffles me ? When there isn’t anything more slagging to do towards British fighters you come up with this s****t ? Complete waste of air Scott

@jc – and yet if khan wins by decision all the yanks will see he ran from judah!! ha ha typical, even if khan wins he loses in the americans eyes!! becoz the yanks r so stubburn and niave they will think of summit to p1ss on his parade

  • jc says:

body shot wont work and not advisable to a fighter like judah… for khan to win the fight is to box and box… never trade punches… stay out of range of judah… khan posseses greater flexibility but not the greater mind…
judah by KO or ELSE khan by decision…

  • Square circle says:

You need to start training fighters scotty cuz you know so much about the fight game more than Roach. By the way that was sarcasm I know you yanks find it hard to understand. You should ask your boy friend Dirrel

  • paul says:

roach should stop being stingy, and give the pads to someone younger & quicker who can really help the trainee.

  • PAC STOP FIGHTING WHACK FIGHTERS says:

gilfoid shud propose to direll or ward

  • jamie r says:

scott, could you please advise us when your ‘an evening of funny stories and anectdotes with scott gilfoid’ tour begins. I do hope it swings into my town, I reckon it’ll be quite literally a laugh a minute. Oh and is it true that you also do comedy impressions? Your impression of a sports writer never fails to crease me up.

  • Darren says:

I wish Khan would get you on the pads Scott always wrong Gilford. Khan and Froch to smash a couple of never beat anyone Americans……….your pathetic!

  • john paul dunn says:

khan is ultimate he is so fast he makes usayn bolt look like a tortise

  • THE BOSS says:

    ROACH IS SUCH A LIAR

  • ste says:

ward is a hit and run slapper but scott seems to forget this when he writes his hypocritical garbage every day. khan has come a long way since he went to roach and i think he will beat judah.

  • Stuarty says:

Scott your just an idiot pure and simple. A silly, pointless, unimportant idiot whos predictions are 90% of the time wrong and whos opinions mean nothing.

  • Anonymous says:

khan has 17k.os in 25 fights!! that says enough for me gilfold u idiot

  • Matt says:

So, you don’t like hit and run slappers, yet you adore Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward?

    Thats a glaring contradiction.

  • t, says:

Khans few fans of is own Ike can’t get over the fact!! plain and simple he is not liked so shut the **** up and get use to it!.

  • Anonymous says:

One swallow does not make a summer as does one body punch make Khans a power puncher!!!!!
because after the maidana fight Khans face looked like road killed and Maidnana was unmarked.

  • Boxing Fan says:

i love how Scotty thinks Roach is complaining about the punches hurting as opposed to him pointing out how ON Khan is right now and ready he is for the fight hahahahahaha

Love it Scotty, keep it up son, we need good comedy

  • BoxingFan says:

Khan wins by KO in late rounds…

  • Vinz Felix says:

Don’t forget that this is coming from the same man that takes punches from Manny Pacquiao – a known knock-out puncher. I’m not saying he’s telling the truth, I’m just saying for him to make a statement that he’s getting hurt to the body – means he is feeling Amir’s use of his power.

  • Jonny says:

Roach only does the pads because doctors tell him that it will help him control his muscles better, with all that Parkinsons and stuff. And yeah, Khan can hit had when he sits down on his punches. Possibly a new tactic?? Quick, light hands in the first six rounds and then slower, heavier punches in the latter??

  • A.J says:

khans a slapper just like gilfoids momma

  • kid-rich says:

    Beat me to it West!

  • West says:

The body shot that had Maidana rolling around the floor in agony was one of the best thrown last year, when Khan sits down on his punches he can be devastating but he tends to throw fast combinations, if he mixed it up a bit more he would get more stoppages

  • true boxing fan says:

U FORGET ABT THE BODY SHOTS THAT PUT MADAINA ON THE FLOOR…..U ARE A COMPLETE FOOL
