Merchant thinks Khan-Mayweather would be an interesting fight
By William Mackay: Unlike most people who feel that IBF/WBO light welterweight champion Amir Khan would be in way over his head in a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr if they make this fight next year, Larry Merchant sees it as a potentially competitive fight.
“Speed is a serious problem for older fighters,” Merchant said at examiner.com. “I’m not saying it can’t be overcome and I’m not saying that beating [Zab] Judah is in the same class as beating some other guys here, but I think that Khan is a fighter to be reckoned with.”
Merchant goes on to say that Judah performed poorly in his recent 5th round TKO loss to Khan, and the outcome was “Totally predictable.” In that case, Khan’s management picked out a perfect fighter for Khan to look good against and give the appearance that Khan is better than he might be. Khan didn’t look especially good in taking a beating against Marcos Maidana, and looked very ordinary in missing all night long in his win over little known Paul McCloskey in April.
Yet boxing fans are ready to label Khan as a great fighter based on a win over an overly cautious frozen Judah. I don’t buy it. Khan fought a guy that didn’t want to fight and basically rolled over for him by not letting his hands go in the fight. I see the Khan win over Judah as a case of Khan beating a guy that didn’t want it. It’s not an indication of how good Khan is but rather how bad Judah is. I say put Khan back in with guys that can fight like Marcos Maidana and Breidis Prescott and lets see if Khan is for real. Merchant doesn’t think there is anyone in the division left for Khan to fight other than Timothy Bradley, who unavailable. Merchant totally overlooks Maidana, Prescott and Robert Guerrero for some reason.
Mayweather will destroy Khan when this fight gets made and people will understand how wrong they were to hype Khan.

Khan will give Mayweather a run for his “money”.
Larry is spot on, Khan is rising star, accept is William wacky. Is Khan better or Mayweather, there is only one way to find out.. ffightttttt! (until then Mr. Wacky gets paid writing about Khan, he has written 6 articles about the King in a day.. I think wacky is on Khan promotions’ payroll)
larry knows boxing and knows what he is talking about
How interesting Larry
floyd wants khan after ortiz. he doesn’t want amir to get well suited at welterweight. khan said he needs two more fights but floyd already wants khan. floyd will face amir early when khan is still at light welter so that amir will be bloated when he face floyd. lol! amir will just be another bloated fighter at floyd’s resume hahaha…
by the way, floyd said pac will be next after ortiz…hmmmm, why a sudden change of mind??? excuses again???
Who cares what Larry Merchant thinks. He knows absolutely nothing about the sport of boxing. He is just a commentator and not even a good one at that.
Khan no were near ready for Floyd, he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence.
the floyd fight will be the same as judah … a young, good fighter beating an older, good fighter
merchant must’ve been drinking again.
I agree Khan is about the same size as Floyd and has a real jab. I think Khan could give Money some problems but i still think Floyd wins that one.
Merchant is a little bit senile …it would be a fight in which Khan would be KOd quickly ……..However he would still get Paid
Matweather and Khan is like Mayweather and Pacquiao it will never happen Mayweather doesnt like to fight Pacquiao but he likes ro fight Khan for the easy money,he think Khan is like Ortiz,no Khan said if he fight Mayweather it should be on equal level 50-50 there it goes,as greedy as Mayweather he will not split the money equally with Khan,Khan is smart we will see Mayweather retires again after Ortiz.
both khan and pac would be mayweather. oh, and so will ortiz.
Why won t Uncle Bob have khan fight Pacman, since he like to keep things in house.
Facts wrong!! Khan is WBA champ not WBO>>>
@grizzly1 cool story bro
khan does stand a chance against mayweather, if you dont knock khan out you will most likely lose- and mayweather isnt knocking them out like he used to…..
Khan is a star but he needs to stop cherry picking opponents. It will backfire in the long run.
Good future fight
bet it would be interesting yeah,
The Genius of larry Merchant points this out after the fact.
Khant at 147 is a whole new Monster and although Floyd hasn’t KO anyone at 147 (sans overrated Hatton), one can conclude that Victor Ortiz is a better fighter than Khan.
Khan can prove me wrong by moving up in weight and fighting Berto. If he can beat Berto at welter, than he can talk about Floyd.
Floyd must also beat Ortiz and this is a tough fight and not a walk in the park. Ortiz to me is better than Khan.
I thing we know is that we can surely tell of a mismatch after the facts. It’s obvious that people in the know how knew Judah was shot and this was a last payday. The guy quit and to me the punch was boderline and not low.
Mayweather will not fight PAC man or khan dela hoyla showed how 2 beat him and khan could do that way better than PAC man
