Image: Mayweather may opt to fight Khan instead of PacquiaoBy John F. McKenna (McJack): With Amir Khan’s impressive win over Zab Judah last Saturday night now behind him, it is becoming more likely that Floyd Mayweather will be facing Khan than his Wild Card Gym training partner Manny Pacquiao.

Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s), after his victory over Judah, now holds the IBF and WBA Light Welterweight title belts and is becoming increasingly more marketable with each fight.

Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO’s) seems to have shifted his attention somewhat from his arch rival Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) to Khan. In recent interviews Mayweather expressed a desire to fight in Khan’s homeland of England. In addition Mayweather opened his gym to Khan’s fans, many of them English. In both instances it appeared that Floyd was giving a clear signal that he wants to fight in England, and who better to fight in England than Amir Khan?

The Pittsburgh Fight Sports Examiner quoted Mayweather as saying: “I want to invite all my English fans in town to come to my gym this week and watch me work out for my upcoming fight with Victor Ortiz. I love my English fans.”

Khan for his part seems equally eager to face Mayweather in the future. In recent interviews Amir has mentioned that he will most likely be moving up to 147 pounds by the end of the year.

The drug testing debate still separates Mayweather and Pacquiao. The issues that caused a breakdown in previous negotiations to make a fight between the two superstars happen are still there. Further complicating matters is the defamation lawsuit brought against the Mayweather’s by Pacquio’s attorneys. The matter was further complicated by Floyd’s no show for the deposition that he was to give pertaining to the lawsuit.

At the present time with all the overriding issues between Mayweather and Pacquiao, it seems unlikely that a fight between the pair can be made anytime soon. Floyd Mayweather obviously can see everything the fans and boxing writers see and he can read the tea leaves at least as well as anyone else.

As his nickname implies, “Money” is interested in making more of it in an effort to maintain his lifestyle.

A fight between Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan in the latter part of 2012 would be a good match up. Floyd would be able to have a couple of fights to sharpen his skills and Amir would be more of a household name by then. Anything past a year from now would not be advantageous for Mayweather. Khan has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year and presumably will continue to do so.

Mayweather is now 34 years old and as great a fighter as he is even Floyd Mayweather will start to slow down sometime in the near future.
