Marquez needs another tune-up bout before Pacquiao

By Jason Kim: Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KO’s) might need to consider taking another tune-up fight to get ready for his November 12th bout against Manny Pacquiao after last night’s amusing joke of a fight against Likar Ramos (24-4, 18 KO’s). Marquez won the fight by a 1st round knockout after hitting the 25-year-old Ramos with a glancing right hand that knocked him flat on the canvas and left him out cold from the shot.

The KO was a very suspicious one because normally fighters that are knocked completely out have a stunned look while on the way down to the canvas. In this case, Ramos seemed to be alert enough to cushion his fall as he hit the canvas and that made it look very suspicious. Also, fighters that are knocked out often have their eyes still open and Ramos were completely shut. It looked fake to me. Perhaps he really was knocked out from that shot but it didn’t look real to me.

Either case, I think the fight didn’t help Marquez any get ready for a bout against Pacquiao. What Marquez needed in this fight was rounds to get the rust out and he got none of that. This was basically a wasted fight for Marquez. If his goal was to use it to get ready for Pacquiao then it was an utter failure. He needs to pick out someone with a good chin an a willingness to take some shots if he wants to get ready for Pacquiao.

Fighting mismatches against guys without a prayer isn’t a good warmup for a bout against Pacquiao. In hindsight, Marquez needed to fight someone a lot better than Ramos if he wanted to get anything out of the fight other than a payday.

I don’t think Pacquiao has a chance against Marquez. Have you seen Marquez’s last fight? He barely touch his opponent and Ramos was knocked out unconscious (for 5 minutes). Worse than what Pacquiao did to Hatton. And that’s only for the first round. With that power I don’t think Pacquiao can last 2 rounds against Marquez. And if Marquez will tag Paquiao with a power punch… I don’t know… if he is lucky he may end up in the hospital… I just hope that the first punch that will hit Pacquiao is just a job… or something not solid… so Pacquiao will end up just like Ramos… if it’s a power punch… I pray that won’t happen…

  • elgato says:

Dan Rafael ESPN; “This did not look like a legitimate knockout punch. Absolutely, it was a clean shot to Ramos’ chin that certainly could have resulted in a knockdown. But Ramos went down in such an exaggerated manner — first stumbling with his eyes open and then breaking his fall with his right arm — before seemingly tightly closing his eyes, that it just didn’t look like anything other than a really bad acting job, not even worthy of the WWE.”

  • Boxing Dawg says:

I was watch the reply … by the time Marquez connected he was off balance, flat footed and fully extended reach … there was no way to KO anyone with the punch … unless Ramos have the weakest chin or it was a dive.

JMM better have better sparring partners for his training.

  • elgato says:

Ramos was on the floor for about 6 minutes. The punch JMM landed did not seen to be that hard on replay shown.

  • jon jones says:

This fight hasn’t taken place yet, because of Bob Arum. This is an individual who has admitted to lying to the public, and was hit with bribery charges. It wouldn’t be a stretch to believe he may have paid Ramos to take a dive inorder to make Marquez look good, therefore making his fight with Pacquaiao easier to sell to the public. Pacquiao fans seem to forget that Pacquiao was attempting to leave Top Rank for Golden Boy before Arum brought legal action against them; I expect his reason for trying to leave was financial. Delahoya and Mayweather eventually left Arum for the same reason.

  • elgato says:

Pac is a great fighter, but seriously, a style as slick, textbook and prepared as Floyd’s is just all wrong for Pacman. Floyd is also a bigger guy as well. Hit hard enough to hurt
Pacman, and Floyd’s superb D and very good chin would see him being too good.

I think Floyd’s peak weight was 140 lbs. I just cannot see how Pacman gets to Floyd.

I can see Floyd picking him apart all night at 130-147 lbs.

  • Pactards are hypocrites says:

You pactards said Floyd fought a too small, washed up Marquez.
How come Marquez is too small for Floyd?
    Pacquioa is fighting a LIGHTWEIGHT!
You want Pac too fight Mayweather but is Pac going to “become” too small after Floyd knocks him TFO?
Same story with Mosley. Pac was scared of Shane when he was champion…

  • You Got That right. says:

@Foreal! yup! Floyd sais Manny your next! even you not sure if Floyd is sincere to what he said, he dont honor his words and he his lier, Judah a freind of Floyd said, Floyds told him he done on boxing, Floyd by himself he said his waiting om the winner of Sergio vs Paul, did he honor his words?

  • elgato says:

I think Manny believes that Floyd is using steroids too. It’s why he won’t take a test. I think Manny uses steroids and he knows it, but he believes Floyd uses too.

Manny have been over powering oppponents not outboxing them like Floyd. And for a little guy come up from 112 lbs…that just doesn’t happen.

All athletes know this. Manny for sure is using something.

  • jon jones says:

    @Yougotthatright

I know that Bob Arum came forward and stated they would be willing to do olympic style blood testing, but just not with USADA; he never stated with who though. I can’t take Mr. Arum seriously until he states who else he wants to conduct the test under. But everything that has happend thus far confirms what alot of people already believe Arum was doing; which was holding back from the Mayweather fight, and saving it until they no longer had anymore big money fights left. Why else did it take this long to finally except the RBT?

  • Foreal says:

You are waiting for Floyd…to do what? Floyd said…after Ortiz it is Manny, but you expect him to keep on talking, just like Arum and Roach over and over the same thing. This is what Floyd said a few years ago, take the test and we have a fight. If Manny has agreed after several years to take the test, that is all that is needed, now we wait for the fight.

  • the boxer says:

I cant beleive that 99% of people writing here r thinking Pacman will win piece of cake. Marquez can hurt him w/ cuts in the eyes and blinding combinations. IT WILL BE A WAR. why? because their styles r perfect fit. In this fight Marquez unlike for the Mayweather fight dont need fast feet, only his punching combos.

  • firefox 4! says:

@BNB,,, you are the joke dont watch the fight OK!

  • You Got That right. says:

@jon jones! Manny last statement about RBT is his willing to the test, what we are waiting at present is Floyd next move, he remain silent about it, i guess Floyd RBT his firing back to him.

  • BNB says:

JMM looked slow and sluggish before he KO his opponent. And this was at 135 lbs.

The Pacman fight will be a joke

  • The Fighter says:

i bet you Foreal is not jsut a Floyd fan, he his one of Mayweathers clan, they cannot beat Pac inside the ring and has no guts to fight him, thats why they discredit Pac by using their big mought..

  • jon jones says:

Manny Pacquiao more than likely isn’t using anything, but in this day and age it is not unreasonable for an opponent to ask for extra testing. Lets be honest for a second, Floyd really has an argument not to give Pacquiao a 50/50 split; look at the numbers they have generated against commen opponents, and you’ll see that Floyd out does him every time.
The ppv numbers are relevant, because it shows that Mayweather was willing to concede on a demand that based on the numbers he shouldn’t have had to; so it is only fair that Pacquiao concede to the blood test that both of the will be subjected to. That’s just my opinion.

  • You Got That right. says:

@Foreal! are the majority of black Americans use their big mought like you insted of being honest to them selves to discredit other people achivements? man you really sounds like a brainless kid!

  • Foreal says:

Manny has actually complicated things for himself. If I was the judge, I would ask Manny how we can know if Floyd is wrong or right.

  • Foreal says:

    @The Fighter

You are probably sport-on. Does Bobby have a big head like Manny? You see, people react differently to the same drug. Ariza might still be looking into it.

  • The Fighter says:

this is happening now and it will be remembered in the history of boxing theres a boxer name Pretty boy Floyd Mayweather the first coward AAfighter no1 ducker!

  • Foreal says:

The Packman is indeed a freek of nature..no doubt. He is superman in short. Freeks of nature are out of this world, and he is no doubt. Pop..pop…pop..pop

  • The Fighter says:

Bobby Paquiao the younger brother of Manny dont use power pellets thats why he loss his last fight by KO….is it right Foreal?

  • Foreal says:

History will vindicate me. Sometime in the future, many people will remember my posts and will say, ohhhhh, we thought Foreal was just against the Packman, but actually, he was correct and people were being duped. The Packman was truely a cybog!

  • You Got That right. says:

    Foreal is high again!!!!

  • Foreal says:

Marquez has little chance, not because he is not a good fighter, but because he choose a wrong path to fitness compared to the Packman. Easy does it ..all the time.goble..goble..goble..gggooobbbleeeee.

  • You Got That right. says:

@Foreal! you sounds like the drug addict Floyd Sr….thats why your so afraid of the Pac, Hatton was almost killed by the Pac.

  • Foreal says:

One day somedody will talk. Somebody will spill the beans. Either Jinky, Arum, Roach or Ariza will talk one day, not too far from now.

  • Foreal says:

Ariza must be arrested, he almost had Hatton killed.

  • Anonymous says:

Floyd will keeps on ducking the Pac. take the depo coward prove Pac is on peds!

  • Foreal says:

The Packman keeps gobbling the pellets.

  • Anonymous says:

american the answer to your question is……

    $$$$$$$$

  • Anonymous says:

@American! is Pac fighting a LW. when?

  • AMERICAN says:

I wonder why Pacquiao is fighting the lightwieght champion when Pacquiao won a belt in Jr Middlewieght! Thats three divisons apart!!!

  • focker says:

If all fighters are defensive, boxing is dead, Bernard Hopkins, Pernell Whitaker, Andre Ward and Floyd Mayweather are all boring fighters. They made money by fighting offensive fighters.
Defensive fighters needs offensive fighters to draw a crowd or generates PPV buy.

  • firefox 4! says:

@Foreal! Floyd will save you form this clown you said…Floyd cant even save his face from being expose as a coward AAfighter without fighting Pacman!

  • joey says:

there will be no PACMAN vs FMJ fight will happen i’ll bet all my one year salaries

  • The Fighter says:

@Foreal! stop fooling your self, you sounds like a brainless kid!

  • focker says:

Pacquiao needs to loss sometimes to be able to fight anybody. Right now, whoever he fight will criticize as mismatch, Except for coward Floyd and bigger Sergio. If not of this criticism, I really like Pacquiao to fight Maidana, Ortiz and Rios because it is going to be a war. I don’t really like Bradly. I expect boring fight with him. There both midgets, not good to promote.
I don’t watch fight because the fighter is a good defensive fighter, I watch fight because the fighter is a good offensive fighter. I like war!! war!! war!!

  • Lettuce says:

So what’s written in the book is false but what’s boxing fans opinion is the truth? ahhahahaah very funny…

  • Lettuce says:

how do you know all boxing fans in australia agree? have you spoken to all of them? Didn’t Marquez fight Katsidis & Ramos? both young and therefore marketable boxers? yet Marquez still won… how ironic is that?

  • juan manual marquez AUSTRALIA says:

in the books yes but thats only on paper, in australia all boxing fans all agree , and even filipino agree that the fight is only win for manny because he is young marketable boxer , the first is a draw at best for manny and the second is marquez all day so that said manny is in for a war this time cause they cheat the fans from the truth

  • Lettuce says:

all boxing fans know who win those fights, which was Pacquiao!

  • juan manual marquez AUSTRALIA says:

no need for mike jones , watch pac vs mosley , then watch marquez vs katsidis then you know who be fighting the real names the real test , the real best in the division , not a name boxer but a real boxer who fight real tests , juan manuel in SD over pacman because this time they cannot cheat judges again all boxing fans know who win those fights .

  • Lettuce says:

    @Pacquiao exposed

They’re talking about Mike Jones matching with Pacquiao, a young & undefeated talent yet still Pacquiao is crucified for choosing an unknown… hahahaha haters can’t make up their minds

  • Lettuce says:

    @foreal

That makes the mayweathers jealous because they can’t copy Ariza’s formulas… ahahahah

  • Anonymous says:

Tiger123 , what does Floyd Mayweather have to do with this?

  • Pacquiao exposed says:

Why is Manny Pac fighting a lightweight if he is welterweight champion? Why not fight some of these young hungry fighters at true WELTERWEIGHT that have earned a shot? NOT old guys at weight draining catch weights. He keep fighting bums that still have a name to sell PPV that is why..Guys like Barerra and Morrales gave Pac a shot when he was up and coming.

  • juan manual marquez AUSTRALIA says:

pacmans first loss in a long time coming to a pay per view near you

  • tiger1223usa says:

callum /cotto ,clotty .margarito ,mosley are not bums ,fm wanted no part of them ,i give credit to fm for beating mosley .the fm vs jmm was a miss match .

  • tiger1223usa says:

callum / mp fought jmm first ,mp fought jmm 2 times befor fm .so fm fought a mp leftover . mp vs fm 2012.

  • Foreal says:

Do not worry, Packman has no escape route now. All the major bums are done, he is alone in the open, and has to man up. No more games will be intertained this time.

  • Callum says:

Just wish Pacman would fight proper fighters and not handpicked ARUM BUMS.

  • Foreal says:

By the way, I should stress this…the Hatton knock-out was a real knock-out, a block buster. There was no acting what so ever…..Hatton found himself in a very difficult situation because that time, Ariza had not fine-tuned the potency of the concoction. He almost Had Hatton killed. Hatton, you did well to retire, but one bout too late!

  • Callum says:

How can people come on here and complain aqbout Mayweather fighting a Blown up JMM and an old Mosley, when Pacman is fighting worse versions of them. Really makes no sense. I love both boxers and want the fight to be made to shut everyone up once and for all. So when Pac fights JMM this year its okay and when he beat Mosley it was okay, but Mayweather fights better versions of them and its “Too Old” “Too Blown Up” etc etc. The list goes on. Drug testing, Opponents, end of the day it will be settled in the ring. Mayweather UD.

  • Foreal says:

Hahaahaa…Hatton learnt it the hard way. It is good, no sphincters relaxed, otherwise it would have been double trouble. I am sure Ariza was surprised too.

  • MEGABOTH says:

Congrats Marquez you outdo Manny to what he did to Hatton! It should be the No1. knock out of the Year….

  • MEGABOTH says:

Congrats Marquez you surpass Manny to what he did to Hatton! It should be the No1. knock out of the Year….

  • Foreal says:

We have had several scripted bouts in recent years…what a shame!

  • MEGABOTH says:

congrats JMM for winning the best actor award…and to Ramos for best supporting actor…hahaha

  • MEGABOTH says:

Its sooooo right …ITS a FIXED FIGHT! hahahaha watch Ive it over and over …again and again…what a scripted fight…hahahaha

  • MEGABOTH says:

Yeah right…this article is soo real…its really an AMUSING JOKE! hahahaha Likar Ramos might be a better actor than a boxer…

  • Foreal says:

There you are! it says it all. Good luck!

  • BoxingDawg says:

@Foreal … your the IDIOT that keep saying TAKE THE TEST.

If Floyd wants the fight, then just agree to WADA, oversight group of USADA, since Manny said yes to RBT.

Floyd is just a product of good marketing … Floyd is an A S S H O L E with deteriorating boxing skills.

  • Foreal says:

I don’t understand what you Pinoys want. Floyd said he will fight Manny after he beats up Ortiz, but instead of welcoming that, you still say Floyd is avoiding Manny. Let us pray, that both Floyd and Manny get past their opponents, and hope Manny will not have to consult his mum if he should fight Floyd or not. This time the fight has to happen. If Floyd loses, let me hung by my backside, if Manny losses, shut the hell up and acknowledge that Floyd is the best.

  • BoxingDawg says:

Floyd will fight again in 2012 which makes him 35 years old … old and slow . Floyd create more excuses to avoid Manny.

  • BoxingDawg says:

@Foreal .. why Floyd remains extremely popular … is more like hated … Floyd is the BIG A S S H O L E in boxing, and boxing fans hopes he will finally fights a real boxer in his come back.

Real boxing fans wants A S S H O L E S like Floyd to get beat to shut is mouth.

  • Foreal says:

The opposite is correct. You are an idiot if you doubt that Floyd is one of the best fighters today….but for your sake, I will answer you. The boxing skills of Floyd are the best in the business, even his core haters agree to this. Floyd has been inactive for long periods, yet he remains extremely popular…why?

  • BoxingDawg says:

@Foreal … take what TEST? Manny agreed to the RBT.

Arum: “We do accept the prestigious, well-respected WADA. On those terms, Pacquiao will submit to whatever (blood) testing is required so we can make the big fight.”

  • BoxingDawg says:

@Foreal … why you such an IDOIT?

how can you believe Floyd is the one of the best fighter today when his last two wins in 2 years was over a smaller bloated JMM and old slow Mosley?

    Please answer the question.

  • Foreal says:

Every other day, people are working up to reality, it is highly likely that Manny has cheated his way to the top. I can’t understand why Manny has choosen to highten the contraversy by refusing to take the test. It is not just the refusal, it is the reasons for the refusal.

  • Sean says:

That looked like a real knock down! Maybe the way that dude stayed down might have been suspect. Could he have gotten up?

  • David Walker says:

Quick and Easy mate! It’s boxing ONE PUNCH could end anyone’s game.

It could have gone longer but if you had a chance to stop someone hitting you what would you do? carry the fight.. ??

Good fight Marquez! Quick, powerful but most importantly send the message you needed to send.

  • true says:

jmm he’s a true champion with beautiful style , power and skills. the truth is that manny pacquiao style doest look really good and about skills manny not even get near marquez .there is a very big reality that most of the people dont know;that is the determination , manny wills are immense and if you mix these with a dose of explosivity …. you got what it takes to challenge floyd. manny will win a close decision to marquez again . pacquiao vs mayweather will be disappointing boring and as soon manny will get frustraded will get connected and taked out by floyd.

  • khallil says:

i think manny is gonna win but he wont look good doing it he will be hit alot from marquez trust me

  • Foreal says:

I have been saying it….we have lost boxing to the dogs, it suddens me. Our beloved sport has been highjacked by uncooth business men and cheaters.

  • Foreal says:

After the Williums Vs Lara scandal….jugdes will work up. No more acting shows in boxing…no more drugs in boxing. Boxing needs a real regulator otherwise there won’t be a difference with wrestling. We are losing the art in the sport by cheaters faking and juicing matches.

  • Foreal says:

Marquez was trying to mimmick the Packman…..trying out the Sugar style or the Joshua style.

  • BoxingDawg says:

    ???

  • Foreal says:

Marquez does not need another tune-up. Marquez needs to be serious with life and look for Ariza. How do you go into battle with a pistol when your fore has an Apachi? Does it make any sence?

  • Volks says:

As I thought, scripted fight to scare Manny, but not convincing. Marquez has already loss in mental aspects.

  • Mcdomengsabado says:

If a dehydrated Pacquiao can knock JMM down four times, there’s no doubt at welterweight, Pacquiao can finally put JMM to sleep for good the next time around.

  • pakpak says:

marquez its look incredible wow, very capable to knockout pacman i the ring, if he do that his name can write at the hall of fame. he look young and strong than before he easy win to new younger fighter todays, marquez improved into third level of his skill, pacman now is in danger he is in critical level of his boxing career, one punch knockdown marquez win, pacman vs marquez is very suspense and shocking, i’m excite to see these fight..

  • kenyon says:

i thought JMM needed a real workout…Yesterday was an acting workout…LOL…maybe he’s trying to enter showbiz someday!

  • anonymous says:

It is good that some judges got suspended in the lara williams fight…so dont try to pull nothin on the nexy pacman marquez fight JUDGES

  • resistnsmoke says:

    This writer is on drugs.

Lets leave all the fantasy alone and use some logic.

If Marquez wanted this fight to tune up for Manny Pacquiao dont you think it would be a huge error to participate in a fixed 1 round fight?

If this was a fixed fight, do you not think that the fight would at least have been fixed to end in the later rounds so that Marquez at the minimum could have had 9 or 10 rounds of re-sharpening ?

It does not make sense that a man would take a fight to prepare for an opponent and involve him self in a 1 round fixed fight.

Marquez landed, the same shots that he had success against pacquiao, the straight right! Ramos did not see it coming, he got caught clean, and obviously his chin is not to be compared with Pacquiaos.

Marquez proved at best that hes still in top dominant shape, and at worst, that his promoters could of chose a better opponent.

  • ComedyAtCancun says:

What a dive. Turned out a comedy show. Ramos could have made it more realistic. It turned out to be just another hype for JMM vs Pacman fight. Booo….

  • Chris says:

The wins are with Manny but it doesn’t mean he can’t get beat this time, those two fights slipped into Manny’s favor. If Marquez gets caught and goes to the canvas then Manny can raise he’s hands cause the fight is already over they gone the distance twice and they well go a third all I’m saying is Marquez better be ready that’s all.

  • Chris says:

The Fight was not a sham, Marquez made no mistakes and got the job done. Now its his job to try not to make mistakes against Manny he simply has to be on top of his game 110%. I think he’s ready for Manny.

  • Pacquiao exposed says:

Pacquiao is the tune up… Juan already beat man-roid twice! The third time is the charm..

  • Elgato says:

    Garbage of a fight.

  • BNB says:

effing of a fight. It was a fake.

  • BNB says:

    Midget is on steroids.

  • BNB says:

That look fake to me. The punch didn’t seen to had landed that hard. The guy was out for like 63 minutes. It all look fake. JMM looked slow and that was at 135 lbs. Imagine him fighting 9 pound heavier against Pacquiao on steroids…

  • tarmac ste says:

Its all good. if you really know boxing you would know that Marquez beat Paquio twice already!!! Shows how little you know!

  • rri says:

if he was hit that hard he would have stiffed up, he fell real relaxed sat there real calmn. arum needs to die he is killin the sport.

  • Anonymous says:

Marquez take more tune-up fights and enjoy the opportunity to make more money as much as possible before fighting Pacquiao cuz surely, after that youre done and badly beaten and retirement soon follow thereafter. IMO…..

  • elcondor says:

The poor fellow took a dive! Luckily enough, he took a dive in Mexico and not in the U.S., otherwise there’d be screams of “Investigate, investigate!”

  • the boxer says:

Marquez was BORN ready for Pacman.

  • rca says:

No amount of tune-ups will fully prepare Marquez for his coming bout with Manny. It is nostalgia to even think that he will be facing the same Manny he faced during their first two bouts. All one has to do is think whether Marquez is capable of facing Cotto, Margarito, de la Hoya, Hatton and Mosely and destroying them like Manny did. . I hope he doesn’t get hurt badly.
