Khan: Mayweather is three fights away

By Sean McDaniel: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan faces IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah in two weeks on July 23. After that, Khan says he’s going to fight two more bouts against Erik Morales and Kell Brook and then face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what Khan hopes to be a mega fight.

Khan said this to the telegraph.co.uk: “I think within 12 months that Mayweather fight will happen. It is three fights away. If I beat Zab Judah and then have one more contest at 140 lbs, I will then move up to welterweight where I will carry my power. The cut in weight is affecting my power at the moment.”

A couple of things here. First of all, Khan’s power will likely decrease at welterweight rather than increase. If Khan isn’t knocking people out at light welterweight with his shots how is he to expect to hurt the bigger welterweights? Power isn’t so much based on size but on your natural strength. It’s rare that a fighter gets stronger as they increase in weight. If you don’t have huge power at a lower weight, you’re not going to punch harder at a higher weight. I see Khan having to win fights by decision at welterweight.

As for Khan facing Morales, that’s another Marco Antonio Barrera type fight. I give Morales respect for hanging tough with Marcos Maidana in his last fight, but the fact of the matter is he lost and ran out of gas. Why is Khan facing a guy that was beaten by someone he recently beat? Khan already beat Maidana, and he in turn beat Morales. So why fight Morales then? I see that as another record padding fight for Khan. A waste. And taking on Brook, a fighter that has been fighting domestic and European level opposition his entire career, isn’t all that interesting. I’d rather see Khan face Andre Berto or Mike Jones. At least those guys can punch. Brook has some power but he’s not in the class of Berto and Jones.

I don’t think Khan would deserve a shot at Mayweather based on wins over Judah, Morales and Brook. Excluding Judah, those guys are easy marks for Khan. Mayweather will destroy Khan no matter who Khan faces to get him, but he should at least earn the shot by facing some really good fighters instead of easy fights.
