Hunter: Froch’s trainer has no confidence in him thinking for himself

By Scott Gilfoid: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward, feels that WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s trainer Rob McCracken doesn’t have 100% confidence in Froch thinking for himself in the ring. Hunter sees this as a problem, because if Froch can’t think for himself, he’s not going to be able to adapt during the course of a round when Ward starts working him over with angles, speed and different strategies.

Speaking with eastsideboxing.com’s On The Ropes Boxing Radio Program, “I think his [Froch] weakness is his bravado. I think he puts up a good talk in front of the microphones and I think behind the scenes, and there is a lot of proof of this, that he worries a lot. I also think that his coach is not 100% confident in him. He made a comment that as long Froch does what he wants him to do he’ll be alright. So that tells me that he has no confidence in Froch thinking on his own.”

Hunter sounds like a genius. He really seems to know Froch really well. I agree with Hunter. I think Froch can’t fight without being told what to and if things go bad for him, like they clearly will when Ward and Froch fight in the Super Six tournament final on October 29th, Froch will fall apart. I think Froch can do a bit of rough stuff if he doesn’t have his trainer giving him guidance for a changing situation during a round, but that’s about it. And, yeah, I don’t buy Froch’s bravado.

I see a worrier behind the bragging, someone that works himself too hard because of worry about what could go wrong in a fight. The thing is it doesn’t matter how hard Froch works himself before, he’s going to lose to Ward. We’re talking different levels here and Ward is going to show him how superior he is to Froch on October 29th.
