Haye is going to look bad if he loses to Wladimir

By Jason Kim: At the weigh-in, WBA heavyweight champion David Haye looked incredibly confident as he jawed at IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, speaking to him like he was a poor challenger rather than one of the top three heavyweights in the division. Haye has been insulting Wladimir for weeks, refusing to shake his hand and insulting almost every aspect of his game, including his past opponents.

This has obviously helped sell the fight and make it what it is right now. Haye has done a marvelous job of promoting the fight and drumming up interest among boxing fans. However, Haye seems to think that his insults of Wladimir have gone beyond just getting boxing fans interested, but also have caused Wladimir to start doubting himself. With all the talk that Haye has done he could wind up looking rather silly if he’s not able to produce on his promises. He’ll look rather bad if Wladimir dominates him like he did his last two opponents Eddie Chambers and Samuel Peter.

The thing of it is there is a real possibility that Wladimir will dominate Haye. The reason being is that Haye isn’t a combination puncher. He does throw combinations but only when he’s got someone hurt and ready to go. Otherwise Haye is more of a pot shot and run type guy. He’s like heavyweight’s version of Roy Jones Jr. in some ways, but he doesn’t throw combinations the way that Jones used to do. And that’s going to be a problem for him if Wladimir is able to pick off or get out of the way of Haye’s long pot shots. He’s going to be throwing his shots from a long ways away, and if he ends up missing, he could get caught with a chopping right hand or a short left hook by Wladimir. Getting hit by Wladimir is much different from getting hit by John Ruiz or Monte Barrett. Wladimir will hurt Haye and he could either take him out quickly or put him in a defensive mode like he did with Chambers.

The worst thing that could happen is Haye gets dominated and blasted out. It would be better for him to at least make it competitive, because he won’t be totally humiliated afterwards. But if he ends up getting easily beaten it’s going to make Haye look a little bit like a pretender.
