By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) is already looking past his October 29th Super Six finals bout against WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) towards his fight after the tourney ends.

Ward, who besides Andre Dirrell is the best fighter in the super middleweight division, wants to take on IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in his first fight after the Super Six tourney. Ward knows that fight might not be available, which is why Ward has a couple of other big names on his list.

He wants to fight a rematch with Mikkel Kessler in order to prove that his win over Kessler in 2009 wasn’t a fluke. Ward pointed out in an interview at fighthype.com that he never got proper credit from boxing fans for schooling Kessler and making him look so bad in an 11th round technical decision in his first fight in the Super Six tournament in October 2009.

Kessler fans point to some of the headbutts that occurred in that fight as the reason why Kessler was dominated so badly by Ward. But if you look at the fight before Kessler was cut up from a couple of headbutts, Kessler was already getting totally dominated. A rematch really is pointless because Kessler was so far out of his league against Ward and had no chance. Ward also wants to fight Sergio Martinez if he’s interested in moving up in weight to take Ward on.

So far Martinez hasn’t been eager to move up and take on any super middleweights, especially a talented one like Ward. I don’t expect Martinez to change his mind about that because Ward is too intimidating and it wouldn’t be a fight where Martinez would be making huge money. He would likely end up getting badly whipped for little money.

I don’t see Kessler wanting any part of Ward again either and can’t see Bute wanting to face Ward. Bute has been making good money facing lesser fighters in Canada. After all these years of beating up on fodder opposition do you really think that Kessler would want to step up a couple levels to face a dangerous guy that could beat him and beat him badly like Ward. I don’t think so.
