Image: Victor Ortiz vs. Manny Pacquiao now a possibility after Top Rank and Golden Boy have made upBy Chris Williams: There is no longer obstacles preventing WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) from facing one of the best fighters in the welterweight division in WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) after Pacquiao gets through dealing with the 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez in November. Unlike some of the fighters that Pacquiao has been facing in the past three years, Ortiz is young and is fight at the top of his game right now. He’s dangerous, powerful and deadly with his left hand.

I really don’t know who would the fight, and I’m really interested in seeing this bout made. There are no longer any excuses for the fight not being made after Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter for Ortiz, settled with Top Rank promotions recently. The two promotional companies can now have their best fighters take each other on in crowd pleasing fights instead of being limited to fighting their stable fighters.

I’m wondering whether Ortiz will be considered for Pacquiao after he beats the nearly 40-year-old Marquez. It would be more than disappointing to see Pacquiao being matched against a small guy like Timothy Bradley next rather than the much bigger puncher Ortiz. That’s the fight that a lot of boxing fans see happening next. There really isn’t lot of options for Pacquiao. The junior middleweights and middleweights are strictly off limits after Pacquiao took a little punishment in beating an inflated welterweight Antonio Margarito last year at a 150 pound catchweight.

Ortiz might have a little too much power for Pacquiao and I can see this fight not happening because of the danger there would be for Pacquiao.
