Sturm defeats Macklin: Matthew robbed in Germany!

By Dallan O’ Donnell: In the worst display of judging I have ever seen, Mathew Macklin has been robbed of a certain world title by controversial and plain awful judging. One judge gave the bout rightfully to Macklin in an extremely close contest scoring it 115-113.
Sturm in small bursts showed champion quality especially in the last round which if it had gone any longer Macklin would have been knocked out. Last round aside Macklin deserved the win if not then at least a draw.
I would be looking for an immediate re-match on neutral ground if I were Macklin because I really believe it was a hometown decision. Sturm has been talking of a possible fight with Sergio Martinez next but would be best advised to go nowhere near Martinez as Martinez would destroy him.
Sturm should count himself lucky to have won and retain his title. Hopefully Macklin can get another shot at a title as he deserves to be champion. Unlucky, Matthew.

U folks do not understand how this works. I will agree that Mack threw 90% of the punches, because they weren’t getting anywhere. Sterm won because he fought with his head, while Mack relied solely on his fists, and look where that got ‘ em. You can’t win a match on power alone, and while Mack was the agressor the majority of the match, he lacked that balance of offense and defense, a combo that clearly won sterm the fight. A rematch is only gonna be more defeating for Mack, unless he understands that balance that truely makes a championship fighter. I and I is about the only one here who thoroughly watched the fight!!

Why do a lot of ethnic people always bring race into everything? James DeGale is half black and half white so why the hell would he be discriminated against and why do black people tend to claim mixed race people as their own. Sturm can fight martinez whereever he likes it does not matter. He can fight him in his back garden with his mum dad and nan as the judges but it wont save him. Martinez will destroy him!!

How can anyone say that Macklin won the first six rounds?Absolute bias!It was a close fight agreed, but Macklin weakened towards the end.Macklin was the agressor but he wasn’t getting through with clean shots,Sturm blocked most of them and got through with the quality work.
It was a gallant effort and I wanted Macklin to win but all the talk of hometown decisions is common everywhere you go.I have witnessed a lot of bad decisions go against non british fighters in the UK.Even against unpopular British fighters get robbed in Britain.As much as I do not like Degale I thought he beat Groves.

lets be real now u dont win fight by comen forward and hitting arms and gloves all night cleaner and more accurate shots by sturm won him the fight by round ,macklins lack of quality shots lost him the fight lets stop letting the heart overrule the head. great effort by macklin but arm and glove shots dont win you worldtile , and if there was one more round in that fight macklin would have been stopped
Macklin won 6 easy rounds without reply (minimum), even if you gave the rest to Sturm and a home bias 10-8 for his final round flurry the best you get is 114-113, so where 116-112 came from is anyones guess. Closer fight than a lot of comments suggest, but the wrong decision nonetheless.
Macklin was very unlucky last night.

They had a bum called Sven Ottke I watched that clown lose atleast 6 times & the judges gave it to him everytime…..What happens in Germany when you are a judge??? Is there wh*res waitning on their knees in your lobby with an envelope????

Macklin won the bout.. I can see sturm winning the rematch-he is clearly the better boxer and severely under estimated macklin.

I think Everybody could see Macklin was robbed but come on, seriously who didn’t see that coming? As soon as it went to the scorecards it was obvious what was going to happen. How the two judges scored that fight 116-112 is beyong me. That means Sturm won 8 rounds and Mack only won 4. Don’t make me laugh. If anything it should have been the other way! Macklin outworked and outlanded him for almost the entire fight. Sturm just covered up and threw a combo every now and then until about the 10th round! Disgrace!

Macklin won the fight clearly. I had him up by 3-4 rounds, workrate was so much higher than sturm. It is a shame that the sport is in this state . Everybody knew macklin won including sturm and his team. Gettin a decision in Germany is near impossible. such a shame. feel sorry for matt

When Jim Watt has it a draw you know the Brit fighter has probably won. Watt always seems to be very kind to the other guy! Sturm has far better skills than Macklin but a fight should be judged on the contest alone. Can’t see Sturm wanting to mix it with Macklin again!

you know the old saying, to win in Germany you need to knockout your opponent then you may only get a draw or a disqualification.

Not watched the fight yet but from what I have read on here the verdict goes to Macklin with only a few comments stating in favour of Sturm. I validate this with the fact that the pro Sturm comments openly have a racially motivated content.

1 thing left that the germans can show how much they hate every1 not german, and thats robbing every nation of the world the rite to a fair gudging in boxing, I was saddned last night, not for matthew, but for it being 2011 and germany cannot let hometown decisions go to challengers from other countrys, if matthew was german the would have beat his foe by atleist 2. I am proud Irish man and mathew macklin gave the Irish come to win thing a big wakeup call. but FOTY easily at the mo.
Excellent fight, not the robbery most are suggesting. I had macklin winning by 1 or two rounds. Early part of the fight was defo macklin , with sturm coming on stronger in the last few rounds . But Matthews workrate deserved the win for me, sturm is a good champ though . Rematch pls.

Sturm did nothing for the first six rounds and then when he did start throwing quality punches he didn’t throw them often enough.
You could see sturm was the better boxer , his jab looked solid and his punches are thrown with more power and accuracy but for me he didn’t do enough to win the fight.

Casual fans! I watching boxing 25 years before you were probably even thought of. Macklin was robbed pure and simple, ANY boxing fan that knows the sport and can score the rounds would have come up with the very same conclusion.
Looks like judjes got too much Bavarian sausages and beer before the fight , so they was too sleepy to see who won . Shame.
They should take the judges out of the fights. Be honest and tell the fans and the fighters that the only way the lesser known fighter can win is by knockout.

Macklin is a really good fighter! I had the fight 11 rounds to one in his favor.
What a waste! Judges were idiots!! How much were they paid and who paid ‘em?!?! THIS is why boxing is on the outs. Rematch in the U.S., different outcome!! Chalk one up for the promoters.

Have to disagree with the author, it wasn’t the worse decision ever. It wasn’t a good decision, but I have seen far worse. It was an expected ‘home’ side decision.

Fortunately, this problem won’t be present in the Haye-Klitschko fight, since a KO is most likely.

i agree with richie woodhall that if the fight had been anywhere else macklin would have won a ud!matt was constantly throwing shots,maybe they didn’t look flash but he did the job for sure.sturm only started throwing combos from about the eighth onwards and macklin just walked through them.i gave sturm four rounds and that is genorous.great fight but what a robbery and a shame for matthew macklin

Sturm threw a lot less but they landed cleaner. If you want to go to Germany and beat their champ you have to do more.
@I AND I: That’s the point, Sturm CAME BACK after being savaged for at least 4 rounds. Also, although Macklin was landing some shots to Sturm’s gloves, you could clearly see punches breaking through Sturm’s guard or looping over it and hitting him in the ears and neck. His ears were freaking red!
Plus the gazillion body shots… argh. I don’t know what fight you were watching mate. When the punch stats come out the travesty this was will be even more clearer. Hell, Macklin even won the ring generalship… pff.
How did macklin win? Sturm got back into the fight and landed meaningful punches from right hands to uppercuts. plaese watch that fight again.

You guys are really casual boxing fans then because i had macklin winning the 1-3 rds and had sturm coming back strong and landing does right hands and uppercuts and at the 12rd it was even and either fighter needed a big closing round and sturm just caught the judges eyes with the 5sec flurries and he hurt macklin.
Sturm won,simple.
Macklin fought his heart out and anywere apart from Germania would have got a result. Great fight. Respect. Peace x
At the worst (from Mackin’s perspective) it was a draw. This is a pathetic display of paid off judges. Germany GTF.

I couldnt have given sturm more than 5 rounds at the very most. He was forced onto the back foot for 90% of the fight and didn’t look at all comfortable or effective, especially in comparison to thee few times he got the jab working.

i watched it and sturm didnt even do any work, he was lazy and just coverd up and threw the odd eye catching punch.. where macklin worked hard every single round and must of won about 8 rounds because sturm was covering up!!!!!! germany u are a disgrace!!!!!!!
