Image: Mike Jones destroys Munoz in twoBy Dan Ambrose: Number #1 ranked WBO welterweight contender Mike Jones (25-0, 19 KO’s) put on a punching display in showing why he’s ranked so highly in the welterweight division on Saturday night in stopping journeyman fighter Raul Munoz (22-14-1, 16 KO’s) in the 2nd round of a scheduled 10 round bout at the South Philly Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvanian.

Jones, 28, knocked the 35-year-old Munoz down with a left to the midsection followed by a chopping right hand to the head. Munoz was unable to get up from the knockdown and the fight was halted by referee Gary Rosato at 2:29 of the 2nd. Moments before the knockdown, Jones had landed two hard left hooks followed right hand that seemed to stun the shorter 5’9″ Munoz. Jones was quick to finish him off at that point with some additional power shots.

The action was mostly one-sided in the opening round with the tall, lanky 6’0″ Jones landing left hooks and right hands almost at will. Jones chose to bounce around the ring a lot more than he usually does and this seemed to take a little bit of power off of his normally huge shots. It may have also extended the fight by one round, because Munoz looked way out of his class against the big punching Jones. Munoz was able to land some nice right hands of his own in the opening round. However, with Jones’ movement and long arms, he was able to avoid most of what Munoz was offering up.

In the 2nd round, Jones turned up his offensive firepower a notch, as he started sitting down on his punches a little more. Munoz didn’t seem to like taking his huge shots, because he attempted to cover up more than he had in the opening round. He also threw less punches and seemed to be looking to avoid giving Jones any openings. It didn’t matter. Jones was in a seek and destroy mode and there was no way this fight was going to go past the 2nd unless Munoz had a steel chin or a good set of wheels. Unfortunately for him, Munoz had neither.
