Meehan destroys Kirby

By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old heavyweight contender Kali Meehan (38-4, 31 KO’s) destroyed the inexperienced Michael Kirby (9-4-2, 5 KO’s) in a 1st round TKO on Friday night to capture the vacant World Boxing Foundation heavyweight title at the Southport Sharks, Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Meehan, ranked #7 IBF, #9 WBA, hurt the 35-year-old Kirby with two solid uppercuts to hurt him. Meehan then followed with three looping right hands to the head of Kirby causing the referee to step in and halt the bout at 1:03 of the 1st.

Most of the round was spent with Kirby rushing the tall 6’5″ Meehan and attempting to fight it out on the inside. Meehan did well landing nice short right hands and dominating the action until hurting Kirby with an uppercut.

You have ask what Meehan is doing fighting a guy with a 9-3 record when Meehan has been ranked in the top 20 for so many years. At his age and with his experience, Meehan should be facing contenders, not novices. He looked good considering how poor the heavyweight division is but Meehan should be fighting better opposition than this.

There’s only 2 fighters down under that Kali Meehan should be fighting. Thats Alex Leapai & David Tua. There’s no one in Australia that can beat Meehan except a Leapai or Tua. Micheal Kirby was way over his head fighting a guy like Meehan. The ref stopped a slaughter.

Total mis-match. A well experienced fighter/boxer against a courageous novice slugger. Lasted about one minute.
