Mayweather vs. Ortiz at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 17th

By Eric Thomas: The September 17th title fight between WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) will be taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Dan Rafael on his twitter page. It’s not really surprising that the fight will be taking place in Vegas rather than New York or Texas, as Mayweather Jr. lives in Las Vegas and prefers to fight there so as not to have to travel.

Rafael says that tickets for the Mayweather-Ortiz fight will go on sale after the 4th of July. Mayweather hasn’t fought in over a year and he’ll be taking on a really tough opponent in the 24-year-old Ortiz, who has excellent power, good hand speed and fights out of the southpaw stance. Ortiz defeated World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre Berto in his last fight by a 12 round decision in April.

Ortiz was able to nullify Berto’s speed advantage by staying close to him and outworking him on the inside and hurting him with powerful lefts. Although Ortiz hit the canvas himself twice in the fight, he was able to get up both times and hurt Berto.

It’s thought by some that the Ortiz-Mayweather fight is a tune-up fight for Mayweather to get ready for the southpaw WBC welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao later on in 2012. That makes sense because Ortiz is probably the best possible opponent you could think of to get Mayweather ready for a big puncher like Pacquiao. Ortiz hits harder than Pacquiao but doesn’t have his same quickness.

  • Big G says:

This will be the biggest upset of boxing history ortiz by 10ko

  • High Def says:

If Ortiz uses the Chavez method and actually brawl throughout the fight he will knock out Mayweather

  • High Def says:

Ortiz needs to trap Mayweather in the corner and then attack the head

  • High Def says:

Ortiz should attack throughout the fight just like against Berto

  • High Def says:

After Ortiz wins, he should fight Bradley then Manny

  • High Def says:

Ortiz needs to attack the body, use the Chavez method, then trap him

  • High Def says:

Ortiz will fight and brawl while Mayweather runs

  • The Hurt Business but not for Me Floyd says:

once you step in that squared circle you have a chance!!! to Win, Lose or get knockthaFout!!! unlike most of us posting comments…we are safe lol. player hating from the side lines… This will be a good fight Ortiz is a solid young up and coming fighter…PBF is on the decline and he hasn’t been very busy in the ring! This will be a battle…PBF is the best defensive fighter in the game he makes hard fights LOOK easy! Its a boxing system that opponents haven’t figured out yet!

  • Mayweather killa says:

Floyd will never be the best

  • Mayweather killa says:

    Mayweather preparing Ortiz 4 pacman

  • Jane Doe says:

I agree, no chance for Ortiz. He got suckered in. It’s like Pacquiao fighting the namedropper, Khan. These r boys compared to two men. Fight Martinez, Flloyd. Someone w better resume n maturity in boxing. Later, 2 yrs or so, maybe then Ortiz wd be ready to fight someone like Floyd. Its too early.

  • Jane Doe says:

I dont understd y Mayweather wont fight Martinez or Cotto. Hes picking newer guys that r less threatening to him. Martinez wd easily challenge him and Cotto. Ortiz had one highlight, Berto, and a loss to Maidana. Its too early for Ortiz.

“Floyd is undoubtedly the greatest fighter of all time. Can’t wait for this fight.”

greatest fighter of all time! undoubtedly!
    Are you serious!
you really are a big fan.
Well thats ok i guess, you are free to believe anything you want.
just have mercy for those people you may get influence.

If ortiz will have a fighting mentality like when he fought berto, this will be floyds firts loss.

Just keep throwing punches and just expect and watch for any fast and sudden incoming from floyd, this could become his first loss by points.

U cant be afraid to throw punches and get hit. One of the very reason floyd doesnt want pacquio besides being fast and solid with his punches.

U guys seen mosely on ‘george lopez tonight’ post the fight? When asked by george “what came to your mind after u got KOd?”

Mosly answered “whoa, this guy hits pretty hard”.

  • Brittania Rules says:

    Mayweather wont lose to Victor….Period!

  • Bullet Proof says:

Ortiz should have foguth someone of a lesser caliber than Mayweather. Floyd is going to ruin him. I think Ortiz should have fought Pacquiao first. Mayweather will proove too fast, and too smart, and too elusive.

    Ortiz stands NO CHANCE!

  • DeadsScared says:

Looking at Mayweather vs. Ortiz what you really see is still Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Sadly this will never happen ever. Even if Floyd Jr. himself was on all the PEDs he thinks Pacquiao is on. That’s not what he lacks or needs. He just ain’t got Ba!!$.

  • bagets says:

Texan, Ross!!! Pinoys will schooled you so stop agruing with them, oviously they have better IQ and better education than yours!!!! next time chance your screen names!

  • powerpuncher says:

i go for floyd, ortiz not yet ripe for this one. GBP should have hone him first with fighters in the top 10 rankings. Not so smart move, another young n promising fighter will be wasted.

  • platty says:

hardly a surprise when was the last time floyd didnt fight in vegas

  • Anonymous says:

Floyd will make that crybaby Ortiz quit!

  • Hear's The Thing says:

Floyd is undoubtedly the greatest fighter of all time. Can’t wait for this fight.

  • mago says:

Floyd is 35.5 years now and father time don’t forget no one, plus mayweather hands are all messed up. if it comes to a decision well Boxing is a business before a sport now a day’s so Mayweather will take it like he did when he clearly lost against Castillo and other fighters by just running as soon as he felt their power and mysteriously won every time. However, if it doesn’t go the distance. I believe Ortiz will win. the pressure will make mayweather fight like he’s never fought before. Ortiz by decision definetely

  • Hear's The Thing says:

Have any of you boxing fans heard what Floyd SR. had to say recently about his son?

  • King Yaka says:

What if Ortiz beats Mayweather then beats pac? Would he crack the top 50 fighters? Taking out the 2 best pound for pound fighters. Its very possible. Floyd hasnt been active, living fat off the land. Mannys more active but hes more quantity over quality. Hes ripe too. Ortiz is being put out for a sacrifice. Thats normally how upsets happen. Anything can happen in boxing.

  • Nightmare says:

Easy fight for Floyd and I think it is a tune-up for Pacquiao (hope it is).

Ortiz cannot hit what he cannot see, although he is a very talented and good fighter he is still not on Mayweather’s level.

  • Spider says:

Guaranteed Mayweather win by a boring 12 round decision.

  • jr says:

Ortiz will give mayweather hell …he is a young fighter that strong quivk and is a Mexican warrior w

  • Anonymous says:

I dont believe the hype. This is going to be an easy fight for floyd. That Mexican fighter got no chance at all. Floyd skill will amke Ortiz quit.

  • James says:

I really doubt that Ortiz hits hars harder than Manny!

  • albert pogi says:

look @ the odds , I’m willing to beat one thousand dollar for Ortiz.

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

You guys must be stupid fools if u think Ortiz is a tune up.

  • Anonymous says:

@BNB!!! wake up be real and honest to your self!!!

  • joker says:

so wheres the lads that always bad mouthed mayweahter in the pac articles!!

you cant say much now can you!! mayweather vs ortiz! what a match up!

pacman vs marquez?? c’mon now! another one in the bag for pac!

  • Box1ngTalent says:

    @Floyd Fan i agree

  • FLOYD FAN says:

yes floyd will win but never underestimate ortiz no one gave him a chance against berto and remember certain fighters avoided berto and now floyd chooses a comeback fight against a young lion whhoooo if he beats ortiz the way he beat marquez after 2 years off then i think other fighters should hope that he retires because if he stays active it can only get worse for his opponents

  • BNB says:

This is a workout and a chance for Floyd to display his craft…..Ortiz is the best welter not name Pacquiao.

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

Marquez going ALSO whip PAC,as a matter of fact

  • Box1ngTalent says:

@Mr.Cali North Star Thats just like saying marquez is going to beat paquiao which in my opinion is more likely than ortiz beating FMJ

  • arroyo bob says:

why doesnt he just hire Ortiz as a sparring partner?

  • Box1ngTalent says:

i hope the moneymay from the JMM fight comes out b/c that FMJ was in fantastic physical condition

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

Ortiz going shock the The world. He’s going whip floyd!

  • Keola says:

Mayweather by UD. By the 7th round he’ll be able to do whatever he wants with Ortiz and will take the young man to school.

  • basch says:

for some reason i feel ortiz actually has a chance on beating mayweather..nutss huh ??

  • Arbiter says:

I hope this will be a real good fight, and that Ortiz will not coast like Mosley after he hurt Mayweather in the second round. I really become suspicious when two fighters are managed by the same promotions, be it Arum or Golden Boy.
