Image: Mayweather-Ortiz is a much better fight than Pacquiao-MosleyBy Chris Williams: You got to really hand it to Floyd Mayweather Jr. When he does he fight, he seems to know how to get the maximum attention from boxing fans by choosing either the biggest names or the guys that are getting a lot of respect from fans at the moment. In this case, Mayweather has decided to face WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz next on September 17th.

If you know anything about Ortiz you know that he recently earned a ton of respect from fans in beating WBC welterweight champ Andre Berto last April in an impressive performance from Ortiz. I really like this match-up, and I do believe that Mayweather vs. Ortiz is a much better bout than the recent fight between Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley. That fight was a stinker from the moment they signed the contract.

It’s not that Mosley wasn’t a good fighter in his day, but the problem is he had looked so bad in his last two fights before the Pacquiao fight, which made it very strange that he was still picked to face Pacquiao. I don’t know what to compare this to. It’s like someone telling you about a horrible movie and then you go and waste money on seeing it anyway expecting it to be good. It wasn’t.

Mayweather almost could have fought anyone and still been able to top the Pacquiao-Mosley bout in terms of generating fan interest. But the Ortiz-Mayweather fight promises to be a good one, and I can see this fight bringing in good PPV stats when this one is over. It’s going to be a tough fight for Mayweather because the southpaw Ortiz is fast and can really punch. He won’t stop coming forward like Mosley did and with his power and speed, he could prove to be a problem for Mayweather.
