Haye – Klitschko: The Build Up To The Biggest Fight Of The Year!
By Simon Hirst: David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko is easily the biggest fight that can be made apart from a certain Manny Pacquiao – Floyd Mayweather fight. The heavyweight division is in desperate need of this, and there is a huge level of expectation given how needed it is, and the trash talk between the two over the last three years.
Nobody in recent times has created the buzz that Haye has. Credit has to go to Haye because Klitschko has been around for years and HBO wouldn’t touch him because of his fights. That said, Klitschko is the challenge and his dominant style will be difficult to overcome. Let’s break it down into categories.
Experience
The experience has to go with Klitschko, he has many more fights, more experience in the division and is used to fighting smaller guys such as Haye. He has experience of getting of the floor, being knocked out, knocking many out and the experience to fight the fight at his pace and his style. There is not much Klitschko hasn’t experienced. Haye on the other hand has had less than 30 fights and only 4 at heavyweight. He has little experience in fighting guys as tall as Klitschko, except for Valuev who is a different animal to Wladimir.
Power
Both have huge KO records so this is hard to judge. Klitschko has very good power for the weight and is more proven to score a KO at this division. Haye has shown his power has carried to heavyweight, having stopped 3 of the 4 at the weight, as well as staggering Valuev with a broken hand. Both have the power to KO each other.
Speed
At first glance, Haye should be the man with the speed. He is a very explosive fighter and can explode into his punches, causing them to be very powerful. However, recently, Steward has warned that many of Klitschko’s victims have said they underestimated his speed. Without wishing to disregard this, many of Klitschko’s victims don’t have the speed of Haye, nor the movement, thus making them an easy target. Haye should be the speedier of the two.
Style
Their styles should gel for an interesting fight. Klitschko plays to his physical advantages very well, imposing his reach and height advantages to make sure his opponent is in his reach, but he is not within theirs. This could suit Haye, who will be happy to fight on the outside, looking to exploit any opportunities to use his explosiveness to rush in and get back out without taking any punches.
Weaknesses
Both have been down and question marks are raised about their chin. Haye has been stopped once by Carl Thompson after admitting to cutting corners in training, and whilst he has been down since, he has always got up and won via stoppage. Klitschko has been stopped three times and doesn’t like being hit on the chin. His style is now adapted to ensure safety first and that he doesn’t get copped. Also, Klitschko’s style means he has little experience at fighting on the backfoot, something that he may have to do if Haye smells blood.
Strengths
Haye is very explosive, has dynamite in both hands and really loves to fight. When in the ring, Haye will be ruthless if he gets the opportunity, a trait that you could argue Wladimir lacks. Also, Haye will not be intimidated in any way by Wladimir in the way that his past opponents have been. Wladimir has a very tough style, uses his size and reach very well and has possibly the best jab in boxing.
Likely Outcomes
Given the power of both, a points decision really does seem unlikely. Some think it will be short and sweet. Some suggest that Haye will be punished before being stopped late. The key to the fight is style. Who imposes their style. Can Haye find a way past the jab. Can he keep Wladimir from grabbing him? Who will land the first significant shot? How aggressive will Wladimir be and how will that suit Haye? There really are hundreds of questions that need to be answered before an outcome can be drawn up. For me, I see both Haye not being able to get to Klitschko and Klitschko wearing him down, or Haye’s explosiveness catching Klitschko off guard and a hayemaker turning the lights out. A visual way to think is I believe it will either be a typical Klitschko fight, or Haye’s Maccarinelli knock out.

Your article was execlelnt and erudite.
This is the biggest heavyweight fight in the last 10 to 15 years, this is the best opponent klitschko has ever faced and whether you like him or not he has dominated the heavyweight division since 2005. Haye is the fastest heavyweight to come along in years with tremendous power. Look for a great fight from two of the top three heavyweights over the last seven years. That is a fact.
Yo Doc
I believe the biggest rage in the US is not MMA nor Boxing! Its freakin Rachael Ray sport!
haye will take wlad out quick
No, I am not interested now. 2 years ago – yes, but not now. Other brother in Sep with Tom Adamek more interesting.
Well this is a big fight in America but honestly the only big fights in America right now are either PacMan, Mayweather, or a popular Mexican(because the Mexicans love their fighters) but honestly unless you’re a boxing fan then you are not interested. In America MMA is kicking boxing’s a*s as far as public popularity. Those of us who do follow boxing a semi excited by this fight. its actully going to be televised which no Klitscho fight has been for the past couple of years and no David haye fight has been televised since he fought Barrett.
In this yanks opinion its an open fight. Both have power, both are athletic, and both have questionable chins. They’re equally good and equally flawed. I think it comes down to who steps on the gas first. I ‘ve wanted this fight for years but the games behind making the fight made me oose interest. I’ll admit, I dont care as much as I would about this fight 2 years ago but I’m looking forward to this fight now. Just hope these guys embrace the moment and go for it.
Wlad in 8. I will miss this joke. I wanted to watch this 2 years ago and haye ran. Wlad was sharp in stopping the guy that beat valuev. Haye ran from an older valuev.
fair and balanced article
weird how this isnt a fight of the year to americans. i love the sport and wud acknowledge a crackin fight and fighters over my countrys fighters everytime. the fact is haye klitschko is one of the two biggest fights that can be made atm. the fact it isnt an american heavyweight is of no interest to me. if more american heavyweight backed up there mouth in the way haye has, then i imagine it might be different. haye ko 2 klitschko imo.
shane i watched one of hayes interviews about 8 weeks before the harrison fight and he clearly said he was gonna finish him in 3 rounds thats why he waited til the 3rd round to start firing.
Simon i was thinking the same about the macronelli fight and thats how i see it could unfold, but 1 good shot from wlad and i see a creed/drago outcome lol.
wlad is in for a smashing….i almost feel sorry for him it won’t be pretty…
Bernsteins cliche of don,t go to the fridge ,will bwe applied to this one.
This will be another short lousy fight with Haye knocking Wlad out cold in the very early rounds. I would not want to pay a dime for it.
@shane
1. u r forgettin the video wlad sent out and all the interviews ppl did with him askin bout haye
2- americans with an ounce of knowledge, includin wlads trainer know haye has a chance
3- he did break his hand, end of.
This aint no fight of the year. I ain’t heard a single person talk about this fight.
As much as i want Haye to win, like shane says David Lahr has predicted this so Vlad will definatly win.
Haye has got a psychological dis advantage in the fact that he was keeping company with a chorus girl and copletely obliterated his family. Try fighting with that on your craw, Any married man knows thats the most important battle. And Haye already lost!
what a bafoon! 1. the only trash talking was initiated and done mostly by Haye. 2.) The fans are not split on this…omly British fans think Haye has a chance. 3.) Haye didn’t break his hand in his fight with Valuev. He has an excuse for every fight where he des poorly.
You only have to look at what he did for the first two rounds in the Harrison fight to know the outcome. Besides, David Lahr already predicted a win for Haye, so we know Vlad will win!
