Image: Dawson vs. Hopkins on HBO PPV on October 15thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 Ko’s) will be fighting former two time light heavyweight world champion Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s) on HBO pay per view (PPV) on October 15th, according to Steve Kim. It’s good fight but it’s unclear how well this fight will do on PPV, because Dawson isn’t a huge star. And you have to wonder how well the 46-year-old Hopkins can draw with boxing fans.

Hopkins has got a decent fan base but it might be a big ask to have fans pay to see him fight. However, if Golden Boy Promotions can pair this with a good undercard then it’s possible for the fight card to bring in some good numbers. But I wouldn’t be too happy to pay $40 to $50 to see Hopkins fight Dawson.

I didn’t think Hopkin’s last two fights against Jean Pascal were very entertaining, and I didn’t like Dawson’s last eight fights. The last fight that I thought was entertaining involving Dawson was his win over Tomasz Adamek four years ago in February 2007. Since then, it’s been downhill for Dawson in terms of exciting fights.

I think Dawson has the perfect style to beat Hopkins, but I doubt that Dawson would be given a decision over him. If the fight is close look for the much more popular Hopkins to get the nod. Dawson has a way of grinding out his wins a lot like IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Technically, Dawson is a brilliant fighter but in terms of excitement, he’s about as interesting to watch as watching paint draw.
