Chavez Jr. says he’ll fight Manfredo Jr. next, then Rubio, and possibly Martinez and Cotto

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0, 30 KO’s) says he’ll be defending his title against number #6 ranked World Boxing Council contender Peter Manfredo Jr. (37-6, 20 KO’s) next, which is slated for November 19th, according to Fight News. Following that fight, if Chavez Jr. wins, he’ll be required to defend his WBC title against his number #1 mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (51-5-1, 44 KO’s) next year.
As bad as Chavez Jr. looked in beating WBC paper middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik by a 12 round majority decision on June 4th, you have to worry whether Chavez Jr. can beat Manfredo Jr. and especially Rubio. I can see Chavez Jr. beating Manfredo Jr. in a tough fight, but Rubio might be a whole different ballgame because of the Mexican’s power and smooth boxing skills. If you present a fighter with zero defense like Chavez Jr. against a puncher like Rubio then he’s going to have a field day teeing off on him with some terrifying shots. Maybe Chavez Jr. will be able to take the punches like he did against the weak punching Zbik but I’m not so sure about that.
Rubio hits a lot harder than Zbik and there’s only so much punishment any one fighter can take before they hit the deck for the 10 count. If Chavez Jr.s trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t fix Chavez’s nonexistent defensive skills then I can see Rubio destroying Chavez Jr. and ruining his chances of a big money fight against Cotto. I seriously doubt that Chavez Jr. will fight Rubio after Manfredo Jr. I can see Rubio being given a step aside fee so that Chavez Jr. can take the cash out fight against Cotto. Rubio is too risky, Chavez Jr. too flawed and there’s too much money to be made in a Chavez-Cotto fight. Rubio, Sergio Martinez and Cotto are a step above Chavez Jr. in my view, and even Chavez Jr. bloats up to 180 lbs after the weigh-in for each of these fights, I see him getting beaten up. Chavez Jr. is a big, big fighter in terms of size and weight, but his power, hand speed and defense aren’t very good.
I don’t ever see Chavez Jr facing Sergio Martinez. It’s all well that Chavez Jr. mentions Martinez’s name from time to time, but that’s about as far as it goes. Martinez would massacre Chavez Jr. and I can’t see Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum ever letting that happen.

Manfredo is better than people give him credit for, if he was never on contender he would be more respected.

I think that someone is sabotagin boxing and is in cajusts with UFC, why else would someone deliberately ruin boxing putting deliverate paper champions like chavez jr and bute etc..to have people loose interest in boxing and shift into some new sport
jr doesn’t have the skills or heart to fight anyone, he is a fraud there milking his last name. Fraud , fraud, fraud, fraud. there taking everyone for a ride and Bob Arum and suleman are part of it. no wonder the UFC has gotten so huge.

Why fight Manfredo first? Why not just fight Rubio? Manfredo is of no significance whatsoever. He should beat him though but I think he will struggle against Rubio. That would be a real 50/50 at best for Chavez jr. It would be hard to predict a fight between him and Cotto because he his so much bigger than Cotto but has nowhere near the same skills. I would put my money on a points win for Cotto because Chavez has a good chin. Martinez though would kill Chavez jr!!! That fight won’t happen!
I believe that Julio can beat Rubio, Cotto, and Martinez just give him some then yall see
Only fools who know nothing about boxing would think that Cahvez Jr would ever fight Martinez. It would be a masacre…and Arum knows this.
Chavez Jr is a side show….not a real fighter….he can beat the well picked bums opponents that Top Rank manages to find for him.
This show that if you have a backing (in this case strong mexican crow) you could make anyone a champ…”paper champ” ….

Chavez jr. needs to stop being scared and fight Martinez. Win or lose at least he would gain some respect but right now Chavez jr. is looking like a coward!!

BEATING COTTO, MARTINEZ,OR RUBIO , I MEAN HE LOOKED HORRIBLE FIGHTING ZBIK AND IN MY OPINION SHOULDVE BEEN A DRAW,AND IN THAT FIGHT I WAS HOPING HE WOULD SHOW ME SOMETHING TO GIVE HIM ALITTLE MORE RESPECT BUT HIS PERFORMANCE WAS POOR JUST LIKE HIS DEFENCE….AND ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOME ONE WILL TAKE THAT BELT AWAY FROM JR. ,,, I CANT SEE ARUM PUTTING HIM IN WITH MARTINEZ HE’S TOO MUCH N A CANELO FIGHT WOULD BE THE SAME THING K.O. If he is defending a belt the commision should make it mandatory he fight martinez. when ur a contender ur promotor makes the calls, but not when u are the champ. U need to defend against the best even if that means possibly losing. Apparently Roach, chavez jr, and top rank are in charge of the wbc 160 belt.
Chavez wil knock joto out,but Martinez will be a challenge.
