Alvarez stops Rhodes in 12th

By Scott Gilfoid: In a total massacre of a fight, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) toyed with British challenger Ryan Rhodes (45-5, 31 KOs) for 11 rounds before getting serious with him and putting Rhodes out of his misery in the 12th on Saturday night at the Arena Vicente Fernandez in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Alvarez stopped toying with Rhodes in the 12th when he came out firing with both barrels, tagging Rhodes with incredibly hard shots until the referee stepped in and halted the slaughter.

How Rhodes could have been ranked at number #3 by the WBC is the big question, because he looked little better than a domestic level novice facing a world champion. Alvarez whipped Rhodes like no tomorrow all night long. It was so bad that Rhodes was just taking shots like a punching bag. This was bad.

In the 4th round, Rhodes got knocked to the canvas. He then got up and was pummeled for the rest of the round. The knockdown seemed to put Rhodes in the survival mode, because once he got a taste of Alvarez’s power, he seemed like he didn’t want anymore.

i would hate and love to see Angulo vs Canelo. Fact is there 2 of my favorite fighters at the moment. Angulo is the harder puncher in my opinion with the more solid chin. but Canelo does not fall far behind in power, and he has the better countering boxing ability along with defense, it would be a tough match, u better believe this will be fight of the year, i never knew a mexican that was not willing to die in the ring. except for maybe ortiz, but hes a late bloomer lol

  • rdt says:

A good performance from the champion, but I’ve seen Rhodes a few times and he has always looked lmited.

  • Evil Scotsman says:

His defence has improved vastly in the space of just one fight! And his body punches are, as Jim Watt would say…”sickening” at times. If he continues improving in this way fight by fight he could be the next big thing in boxing! Good luck to him!

  • R. Dunn says:

I was most impressed by his evolution regarding movement and defense. He must really not have respected Hatton’s power, because it was almost like night and day the way he kept the gloves closer to home base last night.

A good win, and I liked the 1st round upset on the undercard as well.

    :)

    …ryan

  • Insider says:

Alvarez aint no world beater but would trouble some of them he his young an will get better maybe an icon for boxing in future

  • Pride79 says:

Canelos the real deal. He would wipe the floor with El perro.

  • cuban n rican american says:

@c.j.g from t.j.b.c dude if you dont live in florida dont talk because is true puerto ricans live here but so does every other hispanic possible and in most places there are more cubans than puerto rican so cintron beat alfredo fair and square not because he was puerto rican in his back ground cintron had better skills period that puerto rican was good that night point blank but alfredo has way better chin than canelo

  • big fan says:

    A truly non competative showcase.

  • boxalot says:

I was impressed with canelos performance. But how much longer til he fights another champ. And who will he fight? Any ideas?.

  • tauJ says:

Alvarez dominated through the entire fight.

  • RMC says:

Oh well I can admit it when I’m wrong. I thought Rhodes going into this, was on the verrge of a BIG upset!!

Alvarez looked a changed fighter last night, far more impressive than his recent bouts. Whatever he did up at Big Bear….he needs to continue to do it.

Rhodes was ranked N.0 4 in the ring rankings going into this fight, and was made to look very average. Really good performance by Alvarez.

As for Rhodes, if honest that was his last shot at glory and I felt he let himself down, he seemed to freeze on the big night and just never got going??.

  • Shhmo says:

Boring fight get him better opponents or get canelo stripped of that title he doesn’t deserve.

  • Milo says:

Yov finally got a prediction right scott! Just when i put all my money on haye, after yov predicted him losing! Bugger

  • slc,ut says:

Damn them Mexican fighter’s are good.

  • Al Key says:

Alvarez is starting to look like a complete fighter, nice head movement slipping off punches and coming back with huges uppercuts. i’ve always liked his body work, a word of advice to golden boy…. KEEP TRAINING HIM AT BIG BEAR, we all saw a huge game change on Canelo last night.

  • paul says:

another berto in the making……oopps……sorry, i think berto is even better.

  • Tony Y says:

won undoubtedly..but toyed is stretching the truth

  • Evil Scotsman says:

Yeah, but who has Angulo ever fought except Cintron worth noting?

  • c.j.g from t.j.b.c says:

i dont know canelo does have a suspect chin the fight with jose cotto was proof of that i think el perro angulo is way better, yeah people go on and say well alfredo lost to cintron but little did they know that fight was in cintron’s back yard that match was in florida and everybody in that state has puerto rican ties one way or another you all know that so basically it was a gift to cintron. alfredo angulo has never been rocked like canelo, vanes, or cotto he is the one who does the damage vanes vs angulo would be good though.

  • Stuarty says:

Gilfoid, funny how when you get your prediction wrong (95% of the time) we don’t hear from you until the mon/tues night, but when you eventually get one correct your on crowing about it the very next morning!

  • Evil Scotsman says:

Andy- Agree with you, I think Rhodes did freeze but even if he had fought his best fight he just looked far too small and weak to hurt Alvarez. He got bullied in there! Before the fight I thought his only chance was by KO but after about 2 rounds everybody knew that was never going to happen. Alvarez looked good and very strong!

  • Stuarty says:

Gilfoid, funny how when you get your prediction wrong (95% of the time) we don’t hear from you until the mon/tues night, but when you eventually get one correct your on crowing about it the next morning!!

  • Stuarty says:

Gutted for Rhodes but Alvarez looks to be improving. He looks like he could be involved in some real classic wars when he’s in with someone who comes to trade. Gilfoid, funny how when you get your prediction wrong (95% of the time) we don’t hear from you until the mon/tues night, but when you eventually get one correct your on crowing about it the next morning!!

  • Andy says:

Alvarez went some way to convincing me he can be as good as golden boy are making him out to be that was a very mature performance for a 20 year old! I was rooting for Rhodes but he came up short in the end I felt like he froze on the big occasion a little bit particularly early on but fair play to the man he went into the lions den an had a go. A few more of our British boys should be prepared to travel an take on the best calzaghe will never get the credit his talent maybe deserves because he spent to many years defending his belt in Wales instead of going stateside looking for a prime Hopkins or jones he realised this to late and although he still had a great career he left questions unanswered over just good he was

  • Evil Scotsman says:

I’ve got to say that Saul Alvarez looked a much improved fighter from his previous fights. Don’t get me wrong, I still think he can improve more and Ryan Rhodes didn’t put up much resistance. He did well to make it to the 12th but he didn’t offer much in return during the fight. Defensively he looked better than the Hatton fight and he looks huge at the weight because RR isn’t a small LMW. I’m not sure how long he will stay at the weight but it would be good to see him fight someone like Martirosyan, Cintron, Trout, Bundrage, Dzinziruk, Foreman or an all Mexican showdown with Angulo. If he can beat any of these guys then it would be good to see him fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito after that!

  • tino666 says:

never fails to put a smile on my face, reading the comments on here. big up to the gilfriod haters

  • brianNYY says:

rhodes is a disgrace to boxing.

  • LLCoolP says:

    Good, but not complete.

Put him in with Mosley or clottey next

  • opp says:

Rhodes looked drained… i wonder what the contract stipulated about weight… Vanes will smash the ginger kid up…

  • brittish guy says:

martinez is the best middlewieght chavez and alvarez wont fight him most avoided

  • Anonymous says:

martinez is the best middlewieght out there most avoided

  • Terry says:

Gilfraud finally gets one right, albeit a 1/20 odds on shot.

Nice to see he comes staright on to boast, but when froch beat johnson we didn’t hear from him for a week. ha

  • Gipster31 says:

It certainly looked like man against boy to me, Alvarez being the man. All credit to him, he looks like he can become one of the best at super welterweight. Being British, i hoped Rhodes would push him more than he did. No shame in losing to a fighter who is as good as Canelo and he is not yet the finished article. Always enjoy watching a quality fighter prove how good he is without needing to go through the gears. I’m sure he will be involved in some fantastic fights in the future when put in with better quality opponents. Great performance and well done Alvarez

  • lost says:

Congratulations to guilfoid for his first correct prediction on a fight. 96-1. Isn’t bad going

  • sam says:

canello.. will be beaten by martinez hahaha

  • tonrey says:

try putting him up with cotto for a test…or if you want to destroy his future in boxing, try matching him up with Pacman.

  • clueless says:

At least us “brits” have some contenders, last time I checked you fat yanks had nobody of any credibility, unless you count Dirrell the typical american coward…all the weapons but no heart, a bit like your military.

  • firm but fair says:

all you brits were givin rhodes a chance. ha macklin next week than david hayes turn to crumble. boxing at its best

  • michael says:

looked a total mis-match before the start and it was, saying that i thought alvarez defense looked better in this fight not that he needed to use it much

  • Anonymous says:

I am truly shocked. Not because Alvarez won, but because Gilfoid actually got a prediction right for once :D

  • Byron Wallin says:

I can’t say i have seen the fight yet but i am a big rhodes fan and have followed him for a long time. I thought it would be a close fight, and one Rhodes had a chance of winning. By the sounds of things i have underestimated Saul, and it looks like he is indeed the real deal. I think Rhodes still deserves respect and not abuse. He is an older fighter and a true warrior who ducks no one and fought out in the champs back yard. He can leave the sport with his head held high when he bows out of the sport. All those keyboard hardmen that posted hateful comments, will likely never achieve as much as this man has.

  • basch says:

I’ve seen a few of alvarez’s fight and he has changed his fighting style. He is a bit more patient now. He has the strength to knock people out but after a flurry of punches he needs to continue to take his opponent out. Good fight, a bit slow, but good fight..

  • Vince says:

    @bearcat,

We musnt forget how fat a sweaty you are,
You enjoy your burger for breakfast?

  • briitish guy says:

canelo stick canelo in with martinez and see wot happens

  • Beast says:

Rhodes didn’t come to fight at all. I am English, but I just believe that Rhodes didn’t perform well at all. Good Luck to Canelo and he’s only 20, so plenty time to improve.

  • Scott MacKay says:

what do you expect? he fought Ryan Rhodes a euro level fighter & a smaller welterweight euro level fighter in his last fight, its a Joke.

  • Harry says:

Put him in with cotto and see how good he is then..

  • jackie says:

nice to see you jump straight in when you finally get a prediction right scott. even if it was a 1/20 shot.

didnt see you for a week after the froch/johnson embarassment.

  • Bacon says:

i think cotto would beat him

  • WERO says:

for all u haters CANELOS A BEAST and martinez is a beast theyll whoop n e one willin to step up to them el pero is good but to slow

  • Big t says:

I have said from the start of “El Canelo’s” career he will be the next ODLH but better. It is true Canelo has been looked after but Rhodes is no tomato can and Canelo destroyed him.Like to see Alvarez in there with Miguel Cotto next.

  • HATE USA says:

saul alvarez is being looked after, any 1 can look that great against rhodes, mayweather would counter punch this fool all night long….

  • pjb says:

Alverez looks a decent fighter, but his record is padded up with fights like this. his whole career he has not faced a genuine world class opponent, That’s not saying he wont win when he does, but don’t claim he is this World class fighter!

  • domo arigato mr roboto says:

Canelo is progressing beautifully. His technique was excellent. Rhodes face was a mess, the guy took a beating.

  • mago says:

canelo was incredible he will be the next Oscar de la hoya and paquia in one, Oh and el perro already lost and in a big way so stop comparing him to canelo if fight occurs i give el perro 6 rounds before he gets knocked out!

  • jaimehusker19 says:

dame man your so far up angulos a%s that you cant see stright when was the perros last fight he is just like canelo they both are great and have a bright future..

  • Ward and Dirrell, what a TRIO says:

Rhodes is a jounrneyman just collecting a pay cheque.

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

@c.j.g: calm down dude.maybe we should throw you in the ring with Canelo. Geeeez.

  • adam churms uk says:

was rhodes really that bad havnt watched the fight yet cant believe what these fighters write on here can sumbody actually put a honest report on 4 me congrats to alvarez i tipped rhodes to cause an upset but it wasnt to be unlucky ryan well done 4 going to the lions den and having a go shows the heart we all know you got

  • jaimehusker19 says:

when canelo is ready to walk the dog he will fight angulo until then el perro can smell canelos a%s

  • Pride79 says:

Canelo vs angulo would be a war. Canelo will wear his as*s out tho. Hes got way too many skills for El perro & angulo is way to slow. It would be rough for bout 6 rounds, then its target practice for canelo…. as far as Jr is concerned, that guys a fraud, living off his last name. He’s not nowhere near canelos league. Canelo will have Jr out by the 8th round if arum ever takes the ti-t out of jrs mouth & lets him fight canelo.

  • Dave says:

@famous. Rhodes went in as a #3. If he looked like a #20 that’s Cuz canelo made him look like a #20

  • c.j.g from t.j.b.c says:

HEY CANELO YOU BETTER NOT DUCK ANGULO LIKE CHAVEZ JR IS DUCKING MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO. ALVAREZ VS ANGULO! AND JR VS RUBIO! BOTH RUBIO AND ANGULO WILL WIN BY K.O AND AFTER THAT ANGULO CAN GO AFTER COTTO AND RUBIO AFTER MARTINEZ. VIVA MEXICO! EL PERRO & EL VENENO ARE THE BEST.

  • FORGOOD!! says:

when is canelos finally gonna fight some one who fights back???….joke, joke, joke

  • jaimehusker19 says:

there is only one saul alvarez walking along singing a song walking in a canelo wonder land…anyother english men want a try at el canelo.

  • Dave says:

Canelo showed patients and technique, and yet still a bunch of Moran hatters talking s@#t. All I wanna know is who he’s fighting next

  • mr famous aka 408 most wanted says:

Orale!! Now canelo, you need to show the world that you can handle el perro angulo, and martiroshyan…i didnt say win but step up and fight the top of the division, cus rhodes #3 i didnt c a #3 more like #20….

  • Resistnsmoke says:

All these haters saying that Canelo was matched up against some one who had no chance to being with.

Then why did you tune in to watch the fight?

Why did you not bet your house, your car, every last dollar you had, if you were 100% confident Rhodes had no chance.

If i knew a fighter was going to win 100% i would find some idiot to bet everything he had.

Face it, you guys just hate to admit that Canelo won impressively. Not because he stoped rhodes, but because he boxed beautifully and dominated every single round with clean precise hard accurate shots.

you did not expect that from the “hype job”

  • mr famous aka 408 most wanted says:

    @ andre ward
Your a disgrace, dont use andre ward as youre user name…hes a warrior, you should kill yourself and youre entire gene pool cus your a disgrace to humanity…god hates you!!! No ala hatez youuuu!!!!!

martinez duckers please stand up !!!!!!!

  • mr famous aka 408 most wanted says:

    @ andre ward
You show your fear through your comments…in 3 years when mayrunner retires you wont have anybodys n#ts to teabag..and canelo will b 23 and a ppv record breaker…

    martineZ duckers please stand up…

  • Jamstaaaa says:

I put my hands up…..gud fight alvarez! Too slick 2 fast gud allround! Repect goes to matt hatton for going 12 rounds and no nock downs!

  • s says:

The champ has once again taken on someone who had no chance of winning.

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

Canelo going be next big superstar and you haters can’t and won’t stop that!

  • Pride79 says:

@Andre Ward… he’s only 20, but mark my words, within a couple of yrs, he will make ga*yweather his slave. If not sooner.

  • resistnsmoke says:

i cant believe all these haters, still not giving canelo credit.

You have to remember the kid is going to turn 21 next year.

i see fighters that are 34 and dont have the patience, the boxing ability this kid has.

He remind me of a bigger stronger version of marquez. Intelligent, poised, filled with boxing ability.

  • Doc says:

Considering that the kid isnt 21 yet I’d say he is the real deal. Tutning pro at 15 means I’ll discount his first 20 fights as semi pro amatuer fights. So in reality he is more like 23 -0. Which is still outstanding. I’m surprised by his composer and his patience given that he has the 1 punch power and he is not head hunting relying on the big shot. Anybody that cant see the potential is just hating

  • Jac34 says:

Rhodes this Rhodes that were u at lads?

  • KNUCKLHEAD says:

Looked good, but he isnt ready for El Perro, might never be…..

  • D Nice says:

    British fighters suck!!!

  • Bernard says:

i respect canelo so much now, i see boxing in there, give the boy 2 more fights and he will be ready to fight anyone, im american and i said that this boy was all pure hype job, but he was superb in this fight, i saw real boxing technique, respects from NY.

  • Pride79 says:

Bigmoff, big nose where u @??

  • Ward and Dirrell, what a TRIO says:

You can’t blame Rhodes, he got paid, Alverez once again took a second rate opponent, who’s to blame? the underdog who got to make a big mortgage payment or the champ who once agin pitted himself against a weak fighter?.

  • resistnsmoke says:

Canelo is the real deal, the complete package.

  • resistnsmoke says:

The first time i ever saw Alvarez fight, the first thing that stood out to me, was how accurate, intelligent, and patient this kid is.

I mean honestly he boxed a perfect fight, he must of got hit cleanly by 5 or 6 power shots all night thats it.

The kids footwork is real good, he uses the entire ring, his defense improved dramatically this fight, its not like i ever thought he had bad defense, but some do.

Obviously Rhyan Rhodes is a world class gentlemen, he was truthful and honorable tonight. He never ran and kept coming and took some hard shots. I never knew much about ryan rhodes other than seeing a couple of his fights, but hes a true gentlemen.

There is still much to prove for Canelo, still to be determined if he has a chin, and the heart of a warrior. But his attitude says a lot, the kid showed all the makings of a super star tonight.
