Victor Ortiz – the future of boxing?

By Richard Myers: Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22KOs) was once hailed as the new ‘Golden Boy’ and one of brightest prospects on the planet. With a story of rags to riches and youth he was a promoters dream. Along comes the Argentine slugger Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) and his world came crashing down. A great fight with knock downs for both parties ultimately Maidana came out on top and Ortiz was left to pick up the pieces of his reputation.

Since then Ortiz has gone from strength to strength beating solid opposition and always looking good. This included former world champions; Nate Campbell, Vivian Harris and more recently the undefeated Andre Berto. The only dip in form occurred at the back end of the Lamont Peterson fight (a draw) which I thought Ortiz still won. He had Peterson down twice and I felt he won more of the rounds more convincingly. The Berto fight will be listed as a candidate for fight of the year without a doubt. Again like the Maidana fight both fighters hit the canvas. In the end Victor earned the victory and finally a star was born. Unlike the current champions in the welterweight division Victor went for the most avoided and undefeated fighter to prove his point.

Recently it was rumored that Victor would fight Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr. This was quickly ended by the Mayweather party but it got me thinking about who he should fight next. Obviously Manny Pacquiao has been mentioned but this is unlikely to happen due to the ridiculous relationship between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. I also think Victor needs to realise that it is fighters like himself who are the future of boxing and chasing those two names would be a waste of his prime years. He can build his own legacy by facing the other young lions such as Mike Jones, Kell Brook and Amir Khan (when he finally makes the step up to welterweight). There are also the other two welterweight champions Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 KO’s) the IBF champion and Viacheslav Senchenko (31-0, 20 KO’s) the WBA champion. Neither is that young but they are champions and should not be overlooked and both would love the pay day. Too long have champions in Europe been considered paper champions just because the American fans have not seen them fight. Look what was said of Andriy Kotelnik before he boxed Amir Khan. Then he went and made Devon Alexander look like my cat Lilly’s play thing.

Ultimately I believe that Ortiz will be a big star in the next few years and from what I have seen I like him. He is a great guy, he is in great fights, he will fight anyone and he has power that can change a fight around. I hope he does not waste his time chasing Floyd and Manny (even though I would like to see those fights!). There are other meaningful fights to be made…..

If Ortiz had any pride at all, he would be chomping at the bit to have a rematch with Maidana. That incident was digusting (“I’m too young to get beat up like this, I won’t go out on my shield for nobody, etc”). Until he avenges that loss, I have no interest in watching him fight.

maidiana drains himself down to 140 , ortiz vs maidana rematch at 147 please

  • tauJ says:

If he scores another impressive victory in his next fight this fall then he has the fighter of the year category won.

  • Morales says:

He got schooled by Khan in the amatuers, build him up so Khan can take him down. If Maidana could with his limited ability than Khan would beat him one hand.

  • Carlos O says:

Ortiz boxing skills are super. However, the question is his state of mind. Up or down will determine his performance….Great person…. I sure hope he can overcome the past….

  • Chuck-Fil-A says:

He should call Mayweather a ball-less possy. That should get Floyd out of retirement!

  • big dog says:

I think victor is a hell of a fighter, I don’t think anybody wants to fight him at 147 if he faught that good on his first fight at welterweigh imagine what he can bring to the table when he adjust to the weight people say amir, bradley, a rematch with berto, I mean bradley and amir didn’t want to fight him at 140 and rematch with berto hell knock him out on the rematch he took the best shots from berto and ortiz was still coming forward so what is berto going to do sit on the ropes and get beat on again and get stopped

    too early to tell.

but he’s already using that pac b1tch move, using a b1tchweight to win a belt.

Ortiz can prove to be the best when takes on pac and floyd.

    TOO SOON TO SAY

  • BONE says:

I’d rather see Ortiz v.s. Bradley than versus Pacquiao. I need to see more of him.

If victor can continue his motivational restoration he displayed against Berto ,he can go far.Any lapse in extensive training will once again set him back again.

  • Ulol says:

Victor is indeed good but he needs to build his resume and bank account. Fighting Manny of Floyd at this time would be a suicide. His time will come in a couple of years!

  • rca says:

Ortiz is a rising star, with a great future but if he takes on Manny at this time, his career will take a downturn. I watch his recent fights and unless he has improved a lot lately, Manny will take him out in six rounds. It will do him good to bide his time, improve his skills particularly his head movement and footwork and resist the lure of fighting Manny now for a big purse and suffer premature retirement. All he has to do is look at what Pac did to all the recent fighters he defeated badly. Most of them retired and the rest who did not retire are never the same again.

  • arroyo bob says:

Duran quit but fought on. This is different. Back and forth fight. It’ll take more than a steller performance to forget about that. He can overcome it but it will take time and it will be obvious when it happens. In the meantime Victor has the opportunity to make some money.

  • Bill says:

Good article. No need for Vic to go chasing after the head case Mayweather.

  • AreOhBee says:

I agree with Big t, great article

  • objective says:

this guy is good but unfortunately Pacquaio and Mayweather will avoid him.

  • norbert says:

ortiz got my restpect after seeing him take that rock solid right punch from berto and getting up, he showed balls of steel.

  • shuteye says:

It’s too early for him to fight the likes of Floyd and Manny, one good fight doesn’t define how good he really is, he should build up his resume first just like Manny when he came to the US but then again is Victor a gifted fighter like Manny? I don’t think so they come only once in a decade and this decade’s special fighter is not around yet.

  • mr cali north star says:

ortiz the beast! need rising star

  • IAM BOXING says:

    OHHH! Yeeeeah

  • Big t says:

Great article. I have to admit after the Maidana fight i questioned Victor’s motivation and heart, but the doubt soon disappeared especially after the Berto fight, that was one of the most entertaining fights i have ever seen, Ortiz is definately a star in the making. Would love to see Ortiz-Brook both explosive fighters with big power.
