Lee decisions Bunema

By Jim Dower: Middleweight contender Andy Lee (25-1, 19 KO’s) looked good tonight in defeating the hard-hitting Alex Bunema (31-8=2, 17 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision at the Donald Stephens Center, in Rosemont, Illinois. The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90.

Lee, 26, played it safe by boxing Bunema and not taking any chances that he might get hurt or knocked out. Lee struggled in his last fight before this against Craig McEwan last March in a fight where Lee was rocked early and hit often before coming back to stop McEwan in the 10th. This time out, Lee stayed away from exchanges with Bunema and was able to peck away without getting clobbered.

Lee is still trying to slowly work his way to a title shot. He was on the verge of getting a title shot three years ago but was stopped in the 7th round by Brian Vera. It’s taken Lee all this time to come back from that loss, and in looking at how poorly Lee fought in the McEwan fight, he still doesn’t seem like he’s ready for a title shot.

Lee may never be champion, but he’s a lot of fun to watch. I hope they put him on HBO this fall against his old nemisis, Bryan Vera. The re-match could turn into a real war.
