Jones-Lebedev fight should have been stopped sooner before Jones was knocked silly

By Scott Gilfoid: I just caught the Roy Jones Jr. (54-8, 40 KO’s) and Denis Lebedev (22-1, 17 KO’s) cruiserweight fight that took place tonight at the Sport Complex Krylatskoe in Moscow, Russia. Jones ended up taken out in the last seconds of the 10th when Lebedev tagged him with a series of hard shots and put him in trouble.

One particularly hard right hand from Lebedev had Jones’s head rolling. At that point the referee Steve Smoger needed to step in and halt the fight because Jones was out on his feet and defenseless. However, Smoger seemed to freeze at the moment that he needed to step in and halt the fight.

With Smoger not doing anything, Lebedev, who looked like he wasn’t sure he was doing the right thing, landed one more finishing right to the head that pitched Jones over face first on the canvas where he laid there completely out cold with both eyes shut tight.

I think the referee blew it. He needed to halt the fight after Lebedev landed a looping right hand that knocked Jones senseless. At that point, Jones was pretty much out on his feet but his legs were keeping him upright in a bent over position. Lebedev then clocked Jones with a short right uppercut that worsened the situation for Jones. When Smoger didn’t jump in, Lebedev brained Jones with a sweeping right hand that sent Jones down face first. It was an ugly knockout, the type that Jones is becoming known for experiencing.

  • blacksheep says:

The Ref should loose his license.

  • FRN says:

Smoger is one of the worse refs, his only second to cortez…

  • Foreal says:

Roy deserves the serious beating. He will not listen to anybody…is he so broke that he should die in the ring?

  • mosquito says:

these over the hill bums should all retire. Come comission wake the blank up It should be mandatoryfor these older fighters that take beatings like roy did

  • TheMysticalNinja says:

Seriously Roy, step out of Boxing and pursue something that allows you to be close to the sport without getting hurt.

  • Alex says:

The yesterday’s fight showed the following:
    1. The fight was a show staged by Lebedev’s promoter V. Khryunov
    2. Roy Jones is twice as over-the-hill and should quit before it is not too late
    3. Denis Lebedev has not only emerged victorious, but also acquired a lot of his critics because of his last quite unnecessary punch.

  • Bruce Lee hates Failapinos. says:

    KO was completely unnecessary.
Jones is insane, and needs to be forced into retirement.

  • Ozzie Bob says:

Come July! Same thing will happen to Haye! Knocked stupid, but it will be the 12th round instead! Wladimir will give him a pounding! And Haye can’t use age as an excuse!

  • kev says:

perhaps the only one who needs to retire MORE than shane mosley and evander holyfield is roy jones jr…. if he doesnt retire while hes ahead he could end up ruining his chance at the hall of fame… hes known for being brutally knocked out… his song “yall mustve forgot” is quickly becoming the story of his life…. because with all these losses ive nearly forgotten how great he is…. Quit while you can still walk and talk roy…. youre already a legend hang up the gloves…

  • phil says:

  • i know says:

I’ve always hated jones as i hated jordon or the top of each sport because they were main str3eam. but honestly watching this fight if anyone thinks jones of 10 years ago wouldn’t have made this fool look like a total bafoon is crazy…….and oh yeah my wife is russian ! ahaha

  • Melloegg says:

    very sad

  • bigtex says:

Does anyone know how the judges had it at the time of the KO?

I would not even care to see it.As many mentioned he better retire, and boxing commissions have to think twice about letting these fights occur.Ca,t blame Smogert,Your in it to fight and he wanted to fight and take that risk thats on RJJ.We critacise refs for stopping too early, and then one punch too late.He is all right I hope. How many Muhamad Alis do we need to see go way past trhier prime and diminshed skills which at one time those punches would not have landeed. Its a hard call; for the ref.

  • tauJ says:

Jones landed some good shots but Lebedev took him apart.

  • Evil Scotsman says:

No fighter stays great forever in the ring, but they will always remain great outside it when it’s over and no matter how much RJJ thinks he can roll back the years in one final hoorah! Its just not realistic. If he fights again he will get knocked out again!

  • boxing fan 2 says:

Roy don´t be stupid, RETIRE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO PROVE. Please roy jones retire and thanx for the memories.

  • boxing fan 2 says:

    Roy don´t be stupid, RETIRE

  • Evil Scotsman says:

He should have retired after getting knocked cold by Tarver and Johnson then although Calzaghe didn’t have the punching power to knock Jones out he took a lot of punishment for 12 rounds in that fight and now this. Jones needs to be told by the people around him that it’s time to call it a day. He was a terrific fighter and he needs to get out now before he gets seriously hurt!

  • Doc says:

And Hopefully Jones has had a enough beat downs to know its over. When you’re as great as Jones was its hard to believe its over. Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya. SOme people need to get the hell beat out of them before they are willing to accept that its over

  • Doc says:

The Stoppage was late b/c the ref wasn’t ascertive enough. But I’ve seen worse. Jones was dead on his feet but the ref gave him the benefit of the doubt. Not to mention those last shots were just taps to prove the point. Its not like the guy held Roy’s chin up. measured him, and hit him

  • jrldev says:

Shame on the referee and shame on the promoters as well as Jones team that should have known their man is way past his prime to be inside a ring. Jones is very lucky if he is now not handicaped with brain damage.

  • JodyLand says:

Dont put the blame on the referee. If Roy is dumb enuf to get in the ring then he should be man enuf to get what he deserves. Even if it kills him.

  • BIG G says:

the real question should be why was jones giving this shot..why do ppl keep enabling him he should have been retired along time ago..surly he has to go..

  • DUKE says:

I agree and when I saw it, I was like WTF!! Jones was clearly out on his feet and the ref stood there dumb founded. Jones could’ve been killed and I couldn’t help but think of Rocky holding the towel and not pulling the trgger to throw it for Apollo Creed. Shame on you ref Shame, Shame , Shame.

  • Anonymous says:

Give it up now Jones. time to hang it up.

  • Mike says:

Age was not the factor, poor ref and even worse chin!
