Groves defeats DeGale – both look horribly flawed

By William Mackay: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (13-0, 10 KO’s) hammered out a narrow 12 round majority decision over previously unbeaten British super middleweight champion James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s) on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, UK. The final judges’ scores were 115-115, 115-114 and 115-114.

The fight was incredibly close and looked to be at least a draw. It was hard to lean in favor of Groves, because he gave away at least six to seven rounds. Neither fighter looked impressive in terms of comparison to the Super Six tourney fighters, but it was still a good domestic level scrap.

I can’t see either of these guys competing with the top super middleweights right now. Too many flaws in their games, and not enough skills. I think some of the fringe super middleweight contenders like Sakio Bika would destroy either of these guys. I think Groves and DeGale are at the right level competing for domestic level titles, but I see them sinking like the titanic when/if they’re finally put in with world class opposition.

who remember the great days before the forign invasion, when there were no colourds and indians in the united kingdom, then along come the fergal sharkys who bring the gun and knife culture and the raping

  • KLU says:

what you talking about paul you dougnut, cleverly is light heavy and groves is super middle

  • big sam says:

both of them will become world champions , groves fought a smart fight , everyone would love to see a rematch in the future when theyre further developed as fighters !

    groves landed more
    threw more

  • BIG G says:

ak 47 for once i agree with you.as much as im glad degale got brought down a peg or 2.i have to admit that theres no way the judges could have giving the close rounds to gorrves due to the fact he was constantly retreating and as u staeted degale was the agresser constantly..if there aint a rematch the boxing public are being robbed we deserve one…dont hold ur breath tho i expect grooves to avoid degale now at al costs

  • Fightfan says:

For once i cant disagree with the substance of what Mckay is saying but would say thats its a pretty unfair criticism.

Very few fighters are capable of competing at world level 10 fights into their pro careers.

Someone like Kelly Pavlik who has far less skills that Degale or Groves was a world champ because he was slowly taken up the ranks and was lucky enough to face a weak champ.

  • Anonymous says:

Both fighters still young and early in their carrer mackayy, so be quiet.

  • jonny l says:

mackay do you actually have any boxing knowledge. you always say fighters have flaws and lack of skill but never say what they are. at least give a decent argument

  • ANON says:

From now on its gonna be James’SULKY’ Degale…LOL

  • Cunning says:

I already know what Gilfoids going to say…

The only reason groves won was because of his sparring with Dirrel.

i thought id get it down before that p rick does

Well done George! What the f..k is this idiot Don on about?

  • boxing fan says:

One of the best fights ever.I said groves would win. kenny anderson is a decent boxer, and paul smith is made for degale. dont always believe the hype. groves beat degale and will always beat degale. degale looked poor. next best thing….. sure james.

  • Mark says:

yeah there is truth must hurt

  • Dyl B says:

    Chris,

yeah, completely forgot about the elbow in the early rounds!! So in all fair decision.

  • chrisrugbyman says:

De’gale should of had a point taken off for the blatant elbow after he was warned for the shoulder considering this groves should of won by 2 or 3 points De’gale showed he was frustrated and did not have the answers to groves fight plan
Well done groves showed you can box too

  • Mark says:

Don shut the f**k up you knob because I dont remmber john barnes, fashanu, bruno, benn, eubank, watson and linford christie ever complaining of racism

  • Evil Scotsman says:

@Nemo- Groves threw more, landed more and had a higher percentage strikerate. Sure Degale had him hurt once but that doesn’t win you a fight. Groves fought the smarter fight and while it was close I don’t think anyone can argue with the outcome.

  • wardstar says:

Firstly i think the writer should retire (horribly flawed), he must be comparing both fighters to Floyd Mayweather or Pac man, and not 10 fight youngsters, if so spot on dude.
Secondly i thaught it was a decent fight, tactical through 10 rounds then seemed to catch fire. Groves fought a masterful technical fight and had the fight won after 10 rounds. DeGale came back well enough to take the last two rounds and looked the stronger fighter at the end, but unfortunatley for James it was to little to late, he just didn’t do enough early on.
My hat goes off to both, DeGale for finishing the stronger and not folding when it never went his way (showed balls mate), Groves for sticking to the plan when every inch of him wanted to fight DeGale up close, which in my opinion would have been a mistake.
No doubt there will be a rematch, but not anytime soon, look for Groves to vacate and challenge for the EBU title. Look for DeGale to regain the British title (against Kenny Anderson) and all the hype to start again until they ultimatley meet for a world title in about two years time.
On the face of it this couldn’t have worked out better for all concerned, both fighters keep a high profile and ranking, DeGale gets much needed ego check, Groves keeps his which doctors neclace and they all meet up again in two years time and the promoters get a huge payday. Peace x

  • wardstar says:

Must admit i felt a bit sorry for Degale when the bell end ring anouncer Jimmy Lemon Jr blurted out and still………..undefeated and now British champion……..Peace x

  • Nemo says:

I just dont see how Groves won… I might be in the minority, but he was the one who got hurt, degale didn’t get rocked once. Degale landed more punches, and Degale seemed to control the pace of the fight. I had him winning by a couple of rounds. Non the less a good fight to both, I hope to see a rematch : )

  • Paul says:

Degale should go train with freddy, wonder if Frank would allow that! Well done George, u did good.

  • wardstar says:

Why are people so eager to jump on the race bandwagon??? Guess its easy to judge people on the colour of their skin than look in a mirror and smile. Peace x

  • Evil Scotsman says:

Betvu? What’s that mean? As I suspected you are a retard and I think you need to go back to sleep! I’m not Scottish? That’s just something i made up! For what reason I don’t know! Tit! Don’t need to waste my time talking to mentally handicapped people!

  • don says:

They day that a mix race person forgets that they half black, thats the day a white would remain them that they are not white, why a white man call you n199er.

  • liam says:

the end of the day, grudge fights are normaly judged over 3 fights.. groves has won the best of that already!!!! look!… degales the better natural boxer, but he loses to groves cos he lacks balls, heart and spirit. thats why groves will always have his number. degales a bully(shoulder, elbow) mouthing off. groves is one un.. selfabsorbed ginger that bites back!!!!!!!

  • AshleyMac says:

yeeeeeessssssssssssss get in george my son

    degales 0 had to go

  • don says:

Degale is the latest victim of white british racism. just like andre dirrel suffer when he fought in london. LOL, i suppose being half white doesnt not make you immune to racism. hahahaha. i love this is happening to the mix race people,

  • colash... nikov says:

    @Evil Scotsman…. Your that drunk you don’t get it… A betvu ain’t even Scottish u bell end…

  • Iron Hands says:

this DeGale guy was full of talk. he got what he deserve, a second beat by the man who has his number.. i was tired of reading his comments and BS talk. i am glad he lost..

  • Evil Scotsman says:

I thought it was nice of George to call off the bet that he had with James! That could of been the easiest £320,000 he’s ever made!

  • Anonymous says:

If I were Groves I’d say “I’ve beaten you twice now, you don’t get another go… Thanks for the payday!”

    1) Because of the buildup, DeGale really came over as immature and arrogant, and really got a kicking off both Groves and Karma tonight.

    2) Because it’d just annoy the guy so much more that way…

  • Evil Scotsman says:

colash- How can I drink whiskey and sober up at the same time ya melon??? Retard!

  • Daniel says:

Agree both fighters showed they are no where near world level, both showed lack of power aswell, degale has the potential but needs a new trainer, but Groves i dont ever see him winning a world title especially with all the talent with andre dirrell, ward, bute and froch

Ok I’m not going to claim that I know everything about boxing but what becomes apparent to me is that this website is unashamedly anti British boxing. What’s with the critical titles “look horribly flawed”? None of the stuff on this website offers insight to back up the claims. You say these guys don’t have enough skills and someone like Bika would be a challenge don’t you know that Groves did hard sparring with Direll and black eyed him in the process? Ok Groves came away with a few knocks himself but gave a good account of himself. Degale is an olympic champion, and destined for grateness. Take in consideration that these guys have thought a total of around 20 fights between them so that taken into account they have progressed a lot. Go back to Amir Khan in his 10th / 11th fight and you’ll see that he was some way off to the fighter we see today. As for the Cleverly fight I heard that was a one sided beating. Not sure what you guys saw, even ESPN recognise that it was an easy nights work for Cleverly.

  • King Khan says:

I had it a 115-115 draw but considering how groves was a huge underdog I didn’t mind the result. Still think James Degail will be world champ he just needs to throw more punches. Next haye to beat klitschko!!

  • GO.BACK.TO.CHURCH.U.S.A says:

I AM 25, AND DEGALE IS TYPICAL OF THE BLACK / MIXED RACE KIDS WHO I HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL WITH, ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE COMPLETE BULLIES. THEY CAN MAKE YOUR LIFE HELLL.

IT JUST GOES TO SHOW WHAT AN ARROGANT BIG HEAD UGLY BLACK KID DEGALE AND POOR FIGHTER HE IS.

IM GLAD GROVSEY BEAT U, HE’S FIGHTING ON HIS HOME SOIL, DIDNT YOU HEAR THE CROWD!!!!

  • GirlsLikeBoxingToo says:

Don’t remember the exact fight stats, but Groves:
    - threw more punches
    - landed more punches
    - landed a higher percentage of punches

round 5 and 6 were the rounds which i found difficult to score.. gave both to degale and had him winning by 1 so not fussed by the judges decision. can easily see how they gave it to groves. excellent fight. great success for british boxing. hope kevin mitchelll and murray will be as good.

    KISS OF DEATH

    SCOTT YOU MUG

  • Evil Scotsman says:

@Mark M- Groves was up on punches thrown, landed and percentage. It was close but he won!

  • Sean says:

clueless if u come to this site often you’ll realise that SCOTT GILFOID, WILLIAM MACKAY AND DAN AMBROSE are actually a bunch of useless writers who just have a vendetta against brits, if you want a good site bud eastsideboxing.com is pretty good

  • Steampacket says:

Fair play Groves. Fought a smart fight and won the decision over Degale. Close fight and maybe the defeat might teach Degale a thing or two about respect, decorum and general manners…. Doubt it though!

  • Evil Scotsman says:

I had scored the fight the exact same as the two judges who had it 115-114. No doubt it was close in a lot of rounds and it was difficult to score at times but the fact of the matter is that Groves had his game plan to a T and Degale didn’t know what to do and he froze. Degale was following him around the ring and Groves was picking him off with combinations and I think he did deserve the win! Degale did catch him with a good shot I think it was the 10th but Groves recovered well. I think the fight was the exact opposite from what most people thought beforehand but Groves didn’t outscore him in the amatuers for nothing. They expected Groves to chase trying to land big shots and Degale to outbox him and pick him off. How wrong!

  • Lefty says:

    Good on Groves …

Degale was clueless and in a way he got what he deserved. yes, both fighters have a fair amount still to learn ( they have, afterall, both only had 12 fight each ).

I think Groves boved a better fight, but he should of laid into Degale a little more in the last two rounds.

Degale will go back to the drawing board – which he needs.

  • the wraith says:

sorry ment to put 2 rounds up.

  • Mark Magill says:

Saying it was hard to lean in favour of groves is a ludicrous statement!!!! You must have been swayed by the terrible commentary by Jim Watt on Sky who seemed to give George no credit whatsoever for the excellent bodywork throughout the fight.
I haven’t seen them yet, but I am pretty sure the punch stats would favour Groves.

The fight was extremely close. If they were to fight again i’d probably have to favour James as he looked to be able to hurt George more than Georges power could hurt him.

Next steps – George should go after Brian Magee, the European Champion. Magee is extremely vulnerable to body shots, and I think George would have the beating of him by working the body.

I enjoyed the fight, but it did show that neither are close to being ready for world level yet. A Carl Froch, Kessler, Bute, Dirrell or Ward would dispatch with both these fighters very easily at this stage in their careers.

  • Clueless? says:

What a stupid summary of what was a compelling, close and strategic fight. I am starting to wonder if any of the writers on this site actually know anything about boxing.

  • Dom says:

yesssssssssssssssss Georgie Lad well in =D

  • lee says:

De Gale not saying anything now what a big d1ckhead he is, glad groves did it, de gale you t1t

  • the wraith says:

well done groves,,,had groves by 3 rounds. degale was coming forward but just not throughing any punches. never believe the hype. as for jim watts byist commentary towards degale is shocking. why do sky still get him to commentate on fights cause it is like he is watching another fight.

  • jake lamprell says:

always said groves would have him! cant wait to see what gilfoid has to say about it!!

  • Evil Scotsman says:

Loved the look on Degale’s face when the decision was read. What a tool! He actually thought he was getting the decision. Haha. Well done George, almost everyone thought you would lose but that was a very good display tonight!

  • GirlsLikeBoxingToo says:

    >> It was hard to lean in favor of Groves, because he gave away at least six to seven rounds

What utter rubbish you speak, Mr. Mackay. I had it 115-115, though I could have scored it one round either way. I guess your bias filters must be clogged again

  • BIG G says:

boxing fan i dont think its the years of the upsets its more like the year of the hypejobs being found out…

  • wtf says:

de gale bottled the post fight interview lol, nice win 4 groves. i had him a point up but could have been a draw..who says nice guys come last!

  • Boxingfan says:

I havent seen the fight yet but I can only say actions speak louder than words. Guess its the year of the upsets….haye may just have a chance afterall.

  • jonny l says:

i had groves by a round. degale acted like he thought hed won by miles what a ****head

  • Russ Stewart (Down Under) says:

Horribly Flawed………..What planet are you from. Groves fought a masterful fight against an Olympic Champion.

How can that be ‘Horribly Flawed??”

Give the fighters some credit with around 23 fights between them they both did well.

  • My Left Hook says:

Am I happy, oh yes, groves did one one the idiot that is defail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Taj says:

I had it 2 rounds for Groves I couldn’t believe the commentators had rounds 5 an 6 for Degale when Groves clearly won those rounds. I was impressed with the fight especially Groves..showed great movement and energy good jab when he uses it and ring smarts. I’m especially glad for EpixHD because we had no other way to watch it here in the states. Great fight but I felt the right person won which is always a good thing.

  • BIG G says:

well done grooves glad u got the decision degale is an arrogant pillock..if im serious the fight was a draw but hey im glad degale lost his 0.maybe itll bring him down to earth

  • Bill says:

Saw the fight in the US on Epix. Good fight, could’ve gone either way. I liked both guys but I thought Degale had a slight edge for coming forward most of the night. But good fight to Groves.
