Diaz asking for too much money, Marquez looking at other options

By Chris Williams: Former IBF lightweight champion David Diaz is reportedly asking for too much money to face WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez for a proposed July 16th tune-up fight for the soon to be 38-year-old Marquez. This is a fight that Marquez feels he needs to get ready for a bout against Manny Pacquiao in November. The Pacquiao bout will be giving Marquez the biggest payday of his career.

However, due to his advanced age and his limited experience at fighting above 140, he stands little chance of beating Pacquiao in their fight between them. With Diaz asking for too much money, Marquez is looking over other opponents he can have fight him on July 16th. There’s really not a lot to pick over unless Marquez is looking for an especially weak opponent.

And if that’s the case, Marquez might as well skip the whole thing because there’s more risk than there is a benefit to him. Marquez needs a fighter with good hands speed and if he fights a slow or weak guy, it won’t help him get ready for Pacquiao. It actually might hurt Marquez because he’ll be taking a step down from his last opponent Michael Katsidis.

    Beats, Boxing & Mayhem: A lot of this appears to be an ego clash. We gotten so much conflicting information from both sides. Do you feel that way as well?

    Pacquiao: He’s the one that has to look at himself in the mirror at the end of the day. I want the fight. It’s not for fame, it’s because I have a responsibility to the fans that have made Manny Pacquiao who he is today.

    If Marquez wants tune up, THERE IS ZAB JUDAH LEFT HANDED THAT’S WHAT HE WANTS! WHY DAVID DIAZ?

  • Pinoy Aristo says:

    Why not a tune up game at 140 with Co-Legend Erik Morales.. that would make him a better fighter matching up with Pacquiao when both meets at 144-145..knowing Morales is looking for a fight.. thats it!

  • Arbiter says:

    If Marquez is not ready for Pacquiao, why challenge him then?

    @ Floyd overrated

    Okey…then they were damaged goods….They had thier prime beaten out of them from previous guys…Pacquiaos a vulture feasting on leftovers including Marquez!

    @Aloha

    I’m just refuting their claim nothing else… I don’t care if you call me “Pactard” words are cheap & they don’t mean sheet to me

    Remember, you gotta be absolute!

    “Coming off a loss” means “A loss prior to the next fight”

  • Aloha says:

    @ Floyd overrated

    You make me laugh! You’re such a “Pactard!” What are you doing in this hositle place? Yo, i’m outta here……….

  • Floyd Overrated says:

    @Aloha

    The Floyd Fans are desperate, they’ve got nothing to hold on to bcoz their idol is retired so they make up stories to feel superior… Saying Pacquiao only fights someone who’s just came from a loss is clearly making alot of excuses!

    As I said only Clottey had a loss

  • Aloha says:

    @ Floyd overrated

    Try telling that to Floyds fans! They still complain about how Margarito lost to Mosley, Cotto lost to Margarito and how Hatton, Delahoya and Mosley lost to Floyd.

    If you want that to continue may i suggest Marquez takes on Bradley or Ortiz.

  • Floyd Overrated says:

    @Aloha

    Who’s coming off a loss did Pacquiao fight?

    As far I remember only Clottey had a loss prior to facing Manny

  • Aloha says:

    What does Marquez feel he needs a tune up fight? If he’s going to fight, he better fight somebody who he’s sure he can win because i don’t think anybody wants to watch Pacquiao fight another guy who’s comming off a loss.

  • Hear's The Thing says:

    If Marquez wants a “tune-up”, he needs to fight a WELTERWEIGHT.

    ‘Nuff said.

  • Anonymous says:

    this should be 50/50. Marquez should not act like he’s a big draw coz he’s not.
