Chris Arreola now a serious fighter
By John F. McKenna (McJack): It appears that Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (31-2, 27 KO’s) is finally taking his craft seriously. Chris came in at a slimmed down 234 lbs last Saturday night for his fight with Nagy Aguilera (16-6, 11 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center in LA. Arreola has a huge fan base in LA because of his exciting style of fighting and he enjoys fighting there.
One of the questions boxing writers and fans are asking is would he have been more competitive in his fight with Vitali Klitschko and would he have won the fight with Tomasz Adamek with his new found work ethic? Some people, this writer included, were concerned that Arreola had lost too much weight too quickly, but he showed quickness and power in his destruction of Aguilera. Arreola said that the loss to Adamek really bothered him and he felt that he gave the fight away by not showing up in shape. The loss to Adamek may have been the motivating factor in Chris now taking things seriously.
Arreola realizes that he is going to have to fight his way back into contention and that a title fight is not going to be on the horizon unless he earns it. A win against a contender would elevate “The Nightmare” back into the forefront of those seeking a title shot.
Arreola, anxious to get back into the ring quickly, will be facing Kendrick “The Apostle” Releford (22-14-2, 10 KO’s) in the main event on May 27 at the 6,000 seat Reno Events Center. The fight will be shown live on ESPN 2 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT. Arreola said that he needs to fight on a frequent basis to stay focused on his boxing career. He also said that he wanted to stay in shape because he was tired of showing up at press conferences with dark glasses on to hide the black eyes and lumps.
What Chris has going for him is his knockout power and his crowd pleasing style of fighting. He loves to fight and his fans love watching him fight. As a Mexican/American Chris Arreola has the potential to be a “crossover” star in boxing. That is he is very popular in the Mexican/American community but has the ability to cross ethnic lines with his personality. This has not been lost on promoters who are always looking for an American fighter to take on the Klitschko’s. With Vitali Klitschko rapidly closing in on forty years old and Vladimir Klitschko recently celebrating his thirty fifth birthday, time is on Chris Arreola’s side. He needs to continue to do what he is doing and work on improving his boxing skills and technique.
When Chris fought Vitali Klitschko in September of 2009 he was undefeated with a (27-0, 24 KO’s) record. He evidently thought at the time that he had a pretty good chance at dethroning Klitschko. The fight was held at the Staples Center in LA and drew some pretty good television ratings. If Arreola is able to fight his way back into contention and he lands another title shot he will obviously step into the ring in much better shape than he was in on September 26, 2009. Could he apply enough pressure to defeat either of the Klistchko’s? It is a stretch to think he can defeat Vitali Klitschko. Great champions, even in the twilight of their careers have a way of being more dominant in rematches. Hopefully With what Arreola has learned, he will fulfill his promise as a fighter.

Arrola now seems to be more focused then before I think he can now beat Adamek and Haye! But for the K bros he will need to find a diffrent stratagy then trying to bully them! If he can at least partner up with a new trainer with new ideas to help cut off corners better and work on his defence he will beat the k bros!
we need chris, we need the mexican-american fans to keep american boxing on its feet. he has the predigree, he can win a title. the k brothers are aging….. (you’re right about haye, by the way.)
Jackson,
Forget about Haye, he is gone already…
Good to see Cristobal getting in shape. I see he has his heart and motivation back.
Go Chris, you have another chance I believe.
i give arreola a good chance at beating haye, but he wont ever get that fight. his chin is 20 times better, he punches almost as hard. and haye is faster, but arreola is a better boxer. he just needs to be in shape. even fat he had better stamina than haye.
The fact that Chris lost some pounds says that he’s finally gaining self-discipline, which is good to see. It’s also admirable that he’s staying busy. As far as his skills and style though, I don’t think much has changed. Nevertheless, Arreola’s still an exciting brawler who’s lots of fun to watch with a few beers on a weekend. I’m glad they decided to televise his next bout. I could care less if he doesn’t make world champion or (OOH!!) PFP greatest heavyweight. Keep banging Chris!!
The potential is there for chris ,Now he must stay fucused.he has a great chin, and terrific combinations with power.
Arreola look great against a B fighter, I’m glad He decided to lay off his 12 tacos a meal and now is in better shape, but boxing wise, He is the same boxer. He is crispier now, but has nothing new to bring to rematch Klits. He will do ok until He gets to the champ, then he will loose even quicker than the 1st time and maybe, just maybe He will not cry like a girl after the fight.
Agree with the Doctor. Arreola needs to beat some real fighters. Good to see him getting in shape. He is a work in progress.
I like Chris but this fight says nothing. Chris even overweight has never shown a lack of energy or aggression, so no change here. Nagy Aguilera has no pedigree and little experience at this level. What happened was expected. He got TKO’d by Peter and went the distance with a 41 year old Tarver.
That said I think Chris could give Haye a run for his money. The Klitschkos…no chance.
Haye will kill Arreola, he is strong and fast and a hayemaker!!!!!
Good for him lets hope he keeps it up.
Good job Chris ,but please no more kissing on fnf’s!
Will be watching the new and improved Chris Arreola
Arreola is good fighter and he is exciting to watch. Glad he has slimmed down.
that should “but he is not the man”
I like Arreola but he is n the man to dethrone the Klitschkos. He should beat some contenders, work on a plan B (which he didnt have in both his losses) and try and clean up once the K boys are gone in a year or 2. It should be exciting times with Adamek, Arreola, Helenius, povetkin, boytsov and Chisora or Price battling for the belts then, as well as a few other possible contenders like Seth Mitchell, Richard Towers, Tyson Fury, Alexander Dimitrenko, Eddy Chambers and Solis
