Wilson defeats Sheika

By Jim Dower: Former super middleweight contender Omar Sheika (30-11, 20 KO’s), now fighting as a cruiserweight, was shockingly beaten by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night against little known Garrett Wilson (9-5-1, 4 KO’s) at the Palladium Ballroom at Caesars Atlantic City. The final judges’ scores were 118-109, 118-109, 119-108. Wilson, 28, was just too young, too active and too powerful for the 34-year-old Sheika, as he took the fight to him and simply out-worked Sheika for 12 long rounds.

It wasn’t as if Sheika wasn’t trying but he didn’t have the power or the work rate to compete with Wilson. Sheika lost a point in the 7th round from a low blow but that hardly was the reason why he lost. He was simply out-classed by Wilson. Oddly enough, Sheika beat Wilson only last year, beating him by a 4th round TKO. Why Sheika would want to fight Wilson again after stopping him in the real question. Sheika might want to consider moving back down in weight to at least the light heavyweight division if not the super middleweight division.

It seems like Sheika has been fighting forever, as this is his 14th year as a pro. Sheika has fought for the super middleweight title four times in the past, losing each time to fighters like Joe Calzaghe, Eric Lucas, Jeff Lacy and Markus Beyer. Sheika has also fought and lost to Roy Jones Jr. and Scott Pemberton.
