TRIBUTE TO ALFREDO “SALSERO” ESCALERA IN THE 10TH WBO CUPEY RACE AND TRACK INVITATIONAL
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- Dedicated to former Junior Lightweight Champion, Alfredo “Salsero” Escalera, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) presented today the 10th WBO Cupey Race and Track Invitational with hundreds of kids competing in different disciplines, as part of WBO’s program “Kids Drug Free”.
“Here, we can see the future of the sport in Puerto Rico and internationally. That is why we support these events”, Jose Enrique Arraras, President of the Puerto Rican Athletics Federation, said.
Meanwhile, this edition was dedicated to Escalera, a former World Champion, who is always active in these events.
“For me this is great, is and honor this tribute, but I feel more proud, seeing this boys and girls competing here. I’m always helping as I can this event”, Escalera, who fought two times in wars against always remembered Alexis Arguello, said.
There were also a recognition for the young talents Ruben Cotto, basketball player for the Isabela Roosters in Puerto Rico, Eliezer “Waa” Gonzalez, unbeaten proffesional boxer, and racer Michael Merchan, who competed in this event in the past.
Also in the event there were Maria Elena “Mari” Batista, Sports Director of San Juan, Representative Jorge “Georgie” Navarro, unbeaten fighters Luis “El Artesano” Cruz, WBO Latino Champion in 130 pounds, and Jayson “La Maravilla” Velez, and judges Raul Nieves, Cesar Ramos, Hernando Steidel and Roberto Ramirez.
From the WBO, Executive Members, Adolfo Flores Monge, Treasurer, Alberto Rodríguez, Vice Chairman Championship Committee and Administrative Advisor, Manuel Marrero Hueca.
For the kids there was draw 30 bikes, gave shirts, and were rewarded the first three places for categories and disciplines and for the teams.
