Mosley says he expects to control the Pacquiao fight

By Dan Ambrose: Shane Mosley sees himself controlling the May 7th fight against Manny Pacquiao by taking the fight to the Filipino star and making him fight his fight. Just how Mosley can accomplish that is the real question. He no longer seems capable of fighting hard for even one minute of every round and needs a lot of rest breaks in his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sergio Mora.
Unless Mosley can get back to at least where he was in 2009 when he defeated Antonio Margarito using a strategy of punching followed by immediately grabbing, he basically stands little chance of winning next month.
Pacquiao usually is able to jump in and jump out for his combinations. If Mosley uses his punch and grab strategy, he could turn the fight into a wrestling match on the inside and might be able to tire out Pacquiao enough to make the fight competitive.

Mosley will try to control the fight, try grabbing and holding, but here’s the thing:
Pac’s footwork is too damn good. Pac is way too quick for Mosley to grab and Pac will be moving laterally back and forth so quick that all Mosley will be seeing is THE FLASH.
Remember, Pac is this generation’s Bruce Lee. I’m not saying Pac is Lee. What I’m saying is Pac has the work ethic, determination to be the best, and the fitness discipline reminiscent of the great Lee.

He won’t fight Martinez, he says he’s too big, but he fights Margarito foe the JR Middlewwight beight, at a catchweight of 150 rather than 154, makes Cotto fight tof a WW Belt at 145, ywet won’t fight Jr. WW JMM at a place at least somewhere in the middle.

i think many on this forum are thinking like old school boxers, where the philosophy is fight for pride, fight to be the best. whereas now boxers are only shooting to make the big bucks. screw the pride, just string a whole bunch of wins together in hopes of a big money fight. title fights aren’t even regarded as a top priority anymore. (championship belts are kinda like high school diplomas, not worth the paper it is printed on)

@anonymous. of course the blame goes to the boxer.didn’t he sign the contract knowing full well what the contents of the contract were? so shane refused to sign the first time, eh? good. don’t sign something you don’t agree with. take a look at floyd and pac negotiations. neither one agrees so neither will sign. see? of course you may miss out on a big payday but in the end you stood up for your principles and your health. listen man, i understand if you don’t like matches at catchweights but these are risks that have to be weighed by each fighter and their teams. if one asks, the other has a right to refuse. obviously each team feels confident that they are able to work with what the contract states, hence a fight being made. it’s always going to be about leverage. pac has more than shane. fact. floyd has more than shane. fact. therefore he will tend to bend more towards their demands. floyd and pac are equal give or take a little. who has more negotiating power is up for debate. but that is the sole reason for this fight not happening. not osdt, not 100million dollar purses, but who will bend to whom.
@junkies, if Pac is MAN ENOUGH to fight JMM at 140-142 I will give him props…

@fern, if you think Pacquiao can KO Mosley, you need to back away from the crack pipe. Up to and including the 8th round, this will be a WAR with Pacquiao losing the ealy rounds.

dude, you can blame the opponents for signing the contracts but that doesn’t negate the fact that Pac’s demanding the catchweight in the first place.
Get real. He was adamant that he wasn’t going to fight Miguel Cotto unless he got the catchweight.
And it’s funny that you mention ‘don’t agree to the demand’ because that’s EXACTLY what Shane did when he was an actual threat, a consensus P4P #3 contender, and a legit 147 champ. He REFUSED Pac’s demand for a catchweight and what happened? He didn’t get a fight.

Pac’s the one who’s refusing to fight welterweight champs without catchweights. He did it against Cotto, he did it against Mosley. The only difference is Cotto agreed (probably due to pressure from Arum since Miguel is an in-house Top Rank fighter as well). Shane wasn’t Top Rank back then and didn’t have that pressure so he refused.
Same goes for the fake 154 title. Margarito isn’t even a legit 154 contender. But Arum had the rankings manipulated so that Pac’s FIRST fight at 154 was for the vacant crown. And Margarito had little choice but to agree to yet another Pac catchweight demand because of his suspension.
Now we have this contract for a JMM trilogy where Marquez has to fight at welter and he has to agree to a rematch clause.
All that for a LIGHTWEIGHT?
Give me a break. Pac’s nothing but equal parts hype and duck.

These are the only choices to the ending of this fight. I do not think Pacquiao will have an easy night. IMHO, it will be a very long, very bloody, fight for Pacquiao.
I will always tip my hat to the winner. Pacquiao will get his props. Especially if he does the IMPOSSIBLE…KO MOSLEY!

@Anonomous, I agree with you that Shane is a bit older. But he is highly skilled and fundamentally sound. He has a defense, not the best but a defense better than Pacquiao. He still hs power and quickness. A 75% Mosley of days gone by, beats a 100% Pacquiao everyday of the week.
Pacquiao has too many flaws, and the guys swings away with both arms extended. Damn, that is horrible to do against a skilled quick opponent. You can do that against the very slow, ala, “Sloth Slow” Margarito, but not against a fast, powerful fighter like Mosley.
I have seen Pacquia fill a spit bucket, spitting blood. (Morales I and JMM I and II) Have you ever seen Shane as much as bleed?

Pac should have fought Mosely a few months ago, don’t know why they scheduled the fight 8 months after announcement, actuall, I think they were waiting for Mosely to go past it.

The reason I think Mosley has such a good chance is because this fight is literally, Age, Skill, Pedigree, vs. a Wild highly enrgized fighter with very little skill or talent.
I don’t give Manny Pacquiao many props on skill defensively, technically, strategically, or stylistically.
Manny comes in purely offensively with punches to overwhelm. JMM exploited that with the “One Step Backward…The Counter” strategy. Let’s see what Nazim comes up with. It will be Interesting.
The moment Mosley tags Pacquiao flush on the chin or in the gut, Manny Pacquiao will become a “Cautious” fighter.
