McCloskey has a lot to be proud of

By Scott Gilfoid: Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 Ko’s) gave it his best shot in his fight with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) last Saturday night, making Khan hit air for most of the fight and tiring him out by the 6th. Had the fight continued into the second half, I have no doubts that McCloskey would have had an excellent chance of tapping Khan on the chin and knocking him out.

Unfortunately, the referee and doctor stepped in and ruined McCloskey’s big dreams of victory by stopping the fight after a minor cut was opened up above McCloskey’s left eye from Khan ramming heads with him. At the time of the stoppage, McCloskey was looking good, making Khan miss and clubbing him with hard left hands. Khan was throwing a lot of useless flurries, throwing with no power and terrible technique. McCloskey foiled 90% of Khan’s attacks by leaning away and using a lot of good head movement.

McCloskey was setting a trap for Khan, taking him into the deep end of the fight to drown him the way that Marcos Maidana was doing in the last three rounds. Some people complain that McCloskey wasn’t in the fight and that he wasn’t throwing punches. Let me tell you that was all by design. McCloskey was letting Khan shoot up his fireworks early so that he could jump on Khan when he tired out later in the fight.

McCloskey should feel really good about his performance in that fight. I just wish Khan would give the guy a rematch that he so clearly deserves. I don’t figure McCloskey ever getting another chance at Khan. It’s sad how the doctor took away McCloskey’s one and only chance of beating Khan and taking his title.

this was McCloskeys FIGHT HANDS DOWN, I am a khan fan but he was fighting a guy who had Khan sussed. I don’t know who really saw the fight but Khan was messy and childish in his attitude and did not take the event seriously. everybody saw that khan was out for a simple knockout and this man did not bend himself over a barrel. he made khan work and made him look desperate throughout, Theres no point talking of a rematch because this will never happen but this was a fight that would have ended in tears for khan fans..me included. plain and simple.

    @ BigTam

I have to see i’m with you on this one. McCloskey even gave this strategy away in pre-fight interviews!

i love all these comments about how McC wasn’t punching or raising his gloves…if you’d ever seen him fight before (and you really should) you’d see that’s exactly his style. He breaks boxers down with their own weaknesses. Khan was made to look like a tool, missing panic-combo after panic-combo, and it was leaving him tired. Not only that he’d slowed down khan’s game and took away most of khan’s lateral boxing, one of his best traits. He was tying up more and more in the later rounds and McC was doing the right thing by punishing him every time he tried it (albeit with a few taps to the back of the head). I still think McC had a long way to go, but he was definitely fighting the clever game and was getting Khan worried.

    u r a retard scott

  • Bill says:

Are you for real? McLousy didn’t even keep his hands up. His style was a reminder of Prince Naseem who was badly exposed and decided to quit. Khan was 100% correct when he said if the fight continued McLousy would have been badly hurt. The truth hurts like Khan said ” He is on the world level and McLousy is on the European level “

  • King Khan says:

Look it’s simple Mccloskey and his team along with them pair of nobs called the hearns obv saw an opportunity to try an get a re-match to try and line their pockets once more. And that lee to the BS story of going after khan in the later rounds, oh good plan lose 8/9 rounds them try for a KO! sounds a bit like Fraudley Harrison to me!! Oh and he was promoted by eddie hearn so maybe they all have the same strategy!!

    @philiskrewer

    “no longer a treat”

You’re right, more like a nightmare.

  • Editor says:

McCloskey looked really good, thats why he won 0 rounds. He would never of won the fight, no power for KO and if by some miracle he won every round it would of been a draw.

  • philiskrewer says:

hey guys , i am a khan hater but i’ll be onest on these: amir khan looked good for 4 or 5 rounds on maidana fight but in these khan looked awful even if he won all the rounds before the stoppage (the body leguage of mcclosey was clear telling :i hade enough, not for the punishement that was’nt there but for the cut really look bad. amir khan looked like maidana took he’s legs away. amir khan he’s not longer a treat for anybody.

Scott this is probably the most honest and factual article you have ever written. So well done. It is true McCloskey has a game plan to frustrate khan and look to pounce in the later rounds. McCloskey reminds me of Carl Froch very tough and hard to figure out, he lands from various angles and we were just starting to see this take effect but the fight was stopped.

  • A.J says:

khan was not well conditioned for this fight it was clear to see lettin ariza go was a huge mistake.

  • Stuarty_Glasgow says:

It doesn’t take an expert to figure out McCloskey was setting traps for Khan. By the 5/6th round though McCloskey looked very tired and was getting caught more often. Khan looked sluggish & inaccurate most of the fight but set a high tempo from the start and McCloskey was starting to struggle with pace of the fight. McCloskey didn’t do his future title hopes any harm with his performance though and i hope to see him back soon. Hopefully in an international bout.

  • Nathan says:

Khan didn’t look good but he still won every round. No point in a rematch.

  • Nayal says:

Scott… think you must be smoking something… McCloskey deserves a re-match? McCloskey going to take Khan into deep water in later rounds? This was a good fight?? Are you mental? McCloskey did NOTHING throughout the fight… had his hands by as ankles throughout, only punches he landed were rabbit punches… was breathing heavily in between rounds… no way he would have lasted 12 rounds and certainly no way he would have given Khan any problems – McCloskey is not even a big puncher so who cares if he managed to land a sneaky punch on Khan – If Maidana cant do it with those ruthless uppercuts – then McCloskey has no chance…. Agree fight was stopped premature, would like to have seen it go on and let the corner manage the cut – but that cut woud be opened up into staggering proportions by Khan had the fight go on – I would have given it either KO for Khan by round 9… or Stopped on Cuts by round 10…. EASY WORK…. McCloskey does not deserve re-match – quite frankly it really wasnt a competitive fight

  • Harrison bored says:

Khan just isn’t really that good. I don’t think mcclosky hurt him at all but it would of been intersting to see later rounds. Check out khan after each round he looked completely spent but mccloskey wasn’t even breathing heavy. Mccloskey hopefully will get some other big fights .
