Green vs. Tarver on 7/20: Why isn’t Danny facing Lebedev or Cunningham?

By Jason Kim: International Boxing Organization (IBO) cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO’s) will be facing 42-year-old former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver on July 20th at the Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. This is a bout where the two fighters will have a combined age of 80, and is looking like nothing more than a money bout for Green rather than an interesting fight for boxing fans.

Green, since his come back in 2007, has faced Anthony van Niekerk, Julio Cesar Dominguez, 41-year-old Roy Jones Jr., Manny Siaca, Paul Briggs, BJ Flores and now the 42-year-old Tarver. The fights against Briggs, Jones and now Tarver are more like old timers fights than ones against top contenders. Tarver is fighting at heavyweight now, Jones is a fighter that is struggling at this late stage in his career and Briggs was coming off of retirement to take the fight. The question is why isn’t Green taking on fighters like Denis Lebedev, Steve Cunningham, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Marco Huck, Alexander Frenkel, Ola Afolabi, Guillermo Jones, Steve Herelius or Troy Ross rather than defending the IBF title against older fighters? Green can do better than this.

Green will probably beat Tarver, but so what? Tarver isn’t a cruiserweight and is 42, almost 43. I’d rather see a rematch between Green and Flores than see Green take on Tarver. I want to see Green break from his pattern and take on a guy like Lebedev and get involved with the major players at cruiserweight. Picking off old bodies like Tarver, Jones and Briggs isn’t nearly as interesting than going after the top guys that are still relevant at cruiserweight.

Why should Danny fight out side Australia, against “top contenders”? Boxing has long been a joke the world over. Promoters run the sport not the governing bodies. They are the ones who decide who the “top contenders” are by hand picking their opponents and over hyping the fights. Until the boxing federations grow some balls and take back control Green should fight who he wants where he wants, so he gets the home town decisions, much the same as he was the victim of one in the Beyer fight.

Why does this guy keep on fighting super middles/ light heavies? I thought Green was a cruiserweight. Not knocking the guy, just curious!

green is scared to fight anyone with ability. He is trying to get into the hall of fame on the back of past champs he will beat easily. Come on Danny be a man and step up or remain an irrelevent part of boxing history…..

why am i reading about a ausi fighter by the name of danny green when there are ausi fighters like vic darchinien and michael kastedies that have the balls to fight outside there home country, out of there compfort zone facing top notch opponents and giving us entertaning fights. green has power, thats all he has.

theres a couple of good reasons that even if he wanted to green probably couldnt or wouldnt get fights with huck or cunningham. they are both signed up with saurland the same german promoter that green had to deal with when fighting beyer. so its unlikely that any bussiness will happen between those camps. also people keep banging on about how green shouldnt be fighting people over forty but people seem to forget he’s 38 himself. tarver and green has been in the works since 2007 and although i would have prefered to see it then i still think that is a good fight now. tarver has good skills and wouldnt be an easy win for any of the top cruisers. the part where this is a money fight is probably correct but thats what you should be doing at the latter stage of your career dont you think ?

this could be as good as it gets.tarver ageing but savy.

  • Finn says:

Green is now old enough to become Marco Huck’s next victim. However, Huck would have to fight outside Germany and Green would have to leave Australia. How about Canada?

  • Medardus says:

Cunningham has a german promoter who pays good money in germany. And Lebedev gets RJJ next. In his own backyard! Why should one of them go to australia?
And Green is a over the hill fighter who only fight other over the hill fighters in the last two years. This two are far from over the hill.

    Nonsens Articel

When there is a weak governing body, like the IBO – people like Green just hand pick whoever they like. They’ll talk up Tarver and make it into a show, the IBO title is supposed to add some semblence of credibility.

There are plenty of great opponents out there, but when you are the promoter/fighter and have total charge you just make things ‘appear’ credible. Any serious fight fan knows it is just a hybrid type of fight as the previous 6 or 7.

Green is a great guy but the legacy that maight have been was lst forever when he fought Briggs and had total disrigard for Briggsys welfare being a person suffering severe depression + a whole range of other issues.

Green is no special against Tarver! He struggled against BJ Flores. I watched that fight, I thought Flores won it!

If Tarver still has some power, Green might be in for a shock!
